ANDEAN BEAR PROJECT
We are trying to prevent the extinction of the Andean (Spectacled) Bear through a strategy of research and reintroduction. Our biologist, Armando Castellanos, has reintroduced seven captive bears to the wild in Northern Ecuador.  We currently have two bears, Pepito andColleen, in rehabilitation at the Centro de Rescate Santa Martha in preparation for eventual reintroduction.
Armando is now conducting research on the use of habitat and patterns of activity of wild Andean bears in the Intag Region ;of Northern Ecuador. He is tracking the activities of six wild bears that have been tagged with radio collars.

Our work supports local NGOs who are working to expand protected areas. By learning more about the wild bears, this research will help conservationists make better decisions regarding which territories should be protected, as well as improving future reintroduction projects. These strategies together will maximize the chances that these bears can continue living in the mountains that they have always called home.
