For Langston and Ella. May
your gifts live forever. Black poets by the fireplace
As the snow is falling falling
Black poets at the fireplace
As the snow is slowly falling
Musicians all around me
Jazz inside my ears
Deep inside its heart
Jazzonia sings the blues
Please, Mr Jazz-Man
Play a riff for me
Pick, peck
At your pearly keys
Play your poem
Beside the icy streets
O, Poet! dark brother!
Write your jazz and blues
Your pen!
It breaths the soul of jazz
Saxophone and trumpet
Clarinet and Drums
They live inside your words
Jump, words, leap
Leap of hope; leap of faith
Both are feats of music
Please, Mr. Poet-Man
Write a riff for me
Pick, peck
With your pearly pen
Play your poem
Gazing down upon the icy streets
Musicians all around me
Jazz inside my ears
Deep inside its heart
Jazzonia sings the blues
O, Poet, write away
With the same fervor
As a subway Sax-man
Playing for a penny
Rip and riff
And dip and sway
O, Poet,
Write your soul today
