Last night was a 'return to home' of sorts for the ladies, as the girls have played on the road for the past 3 weeks! It also was a return to NIC-9 action versus neighboring Macheseney Park Harlem, a team the program has not beaten in 4 years. The girls were set to change that and withing 10 minutes had seized control of the match. The opening goal was a beautifully struck freekick from sophomore Sam Welcher after some nice build up to earn the foul. The ladies continued their dominance in winning the 50-50 balls and attacking Harlem's goal, but suddenly it halting after about 25 minute mark and thus giving way for Harlem to creep back into the match. The half would end with a couple of other opportunities not being finished, and remained 1-0 in favor of the home side. At halftime the girls were urged to put away the goal scoring opportunities that were being created, and to seize back the momentum. Unfortunately, the team came out rather flat, and within the opening 10 minutes had conceded a goal and given up a penalty. Thankfully for the heroics of captain goalkeeper Courtney Shelton, the penalty kick was blocked and the ladies seemed to draw some momentum back from this. Turning to offense, the girls pushed forward the last 20 minutes with more numbers and began to put their stamp on the game. Similar to the Lutheran match, the scoring that had eluded them in the first 60 minutes now were becoming more dangerous chances in the end of the match. With 8 minutes remaining, the Mathieu sisters connnected on a nice pass from junior Danielle Mathieu to freshmen Kelsey Mathieu for the game winner! The last 5 minutes saw a completely different Hononegah team on the field, pushing with every opportunity to finish off the game. The end result was fair and was a well earned victory for the ladies! Congrats girls!! Belvidere is up next... ~ Coach Eiss

Tuesday night's NIC-9 clash was the annual battle of the Purple-n-Gold.... Hononegah vs. Belvidere. In a tough week of conference battles, this would be the second of three NIC-9 games to finish the regular season. The ladies took to the field in good spirits and showed immediately that they meant business, scoring within the first 3 minutes. The game lulled a bit in the typical back-and-forth flow of every opening 15 minutes, with each team battling for rights of possession, but once the ladies established themselves defensively, their attack kept the pressure on the opposition for the rest of the match. Some great ball movement and build ups led to first half goals by 7 different scorers throughout the match, proving just how unselfishly this team can play when it wishes to. Halftime lead was 5-0, and the final result was 7-0. Goals were provided by (in order of appearance): Kelsey Mathieu, Ana Hayes, Katie Fluegel, Kate Young, Danielle Mathieu, Tiphanie Truax, Vicki Booth. A great win to get under our belts and a nice display of simply, smart soccer by the ladies. Well done girls! One last NIC-9 match remaining on Thursday night! ~ Coach Eiss

Thursday night was Senior Night and the final showdown in the NIC-9 between the two teams fighting for what would likely be the 2nd place finish in the NIC-9. (Funny note: the Freeport coach called it the "Public League Conference Title game"). Freeport came in wanting to be the one team to beat the ladies this season in conference, but on a night when it was all about our one senior, Tiphanie Truax, the ladies had other plans. Scoring on the first Taylor Scott throw-in of the game, the ladies doubled the lead on a excellent direct freekick from sophomore Sam Welcher. The game went back and forth for the last 20 minutes of the half, with Freeport being allowed more room to creep back into the match. This was addressed at halftime as well as putting the finishing touch on match by scoring goal #3. That goal came 6 minutes into the half curteousy of sophomore Becca Marion, and followed less than a minute later by a goal from freshmen Kelsey Mathieu. This seemed to take the wind out of the opposing team's sails and from that point on it was all Hononegah. The ladies put on a display of off the ball moment and passing and finishing (7 goals on 12 shots!) that we have yet to see all season from them. Perfect timing ladies... going into the State tournament!!! The second half saw goals from Kate Young, and two to the lady of the evening - Tiphanie Truax. Congratulations ladies for finishing the season with an undefeated record in conference play for the second season in a row (never before done at HHS!), and most of all congratulations to Tiphanie for her four years of outstanding service in the HHS girls soccer program! We will miss you... but before then, we have some unfinished busy to attend to, right ladies??? Great job girls!!! A special thanks to HYSA and their efforts to celebrate with hs that particular evening. ~ Coach Eiss
