GARBO, Greta - S 1905 - actress -Considered by some to be the greatest beauty ever to grace the silver screen, the reclusive Greta Garbo was notoriously secretive about her personal life. According to author Mercedes de ACOSTA, however, the never-married star of "Ninotchka," and "Grand Hotel" could be open in her affections with the right girl. In fact, Garbo was at the center of Hollywood's "sewing circle" of lesbians. She also had an affair with Cecil BEATON, who wanted to marry her; it was the only time he felt such feelings for a woman. Many of his letters to her began, "My Dear Boy."
GARCIA LORCA, Federico - E 1898 - poet - Federico Garcia Lorca was executed by the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War. He was 38, but during his life he established himself as the most beloved poet in Spain. Today his reputation is worldwide, and he is regarded as one of the most important writers of the 20th century. Garcia Lorca was one of the "Generation of 1927" poets, many of whom were gay. His most well known works include the poem "Romancero Gitano" and the play "The House of Bernarda Alba." When Franco's troops took over his home city of Grenada, Garcia Lorca was "taken for a ride," executed by a firing squad, and buried in an unmarked grave. He is a martyr of the Spanish Republic and of gay culture because both his political stands and his homosexuality were factors in his arrest and execution.

GEFFEN, David (1943- ) U.S. head of the Geffen Corporation - David Geffen has created a billion-dollar entertainment empire by producing hugely successful films ("Risky Business," "Beetlejuice") and records (Guns 'N' Roses, Peter Gabriel, Nirvana.) The perennial Hollywood powerhouse came out of the closet at an AIDS benefit for APLA in 1992. Since then he has been a strong supporter of Lesbian/Gay civil rights organizations and events, including donation of a million-dollar building to house the G/L Services center in Los Angeles. Geffen is now one third of "Dreamworks SKG," the Hollywood Superstudio he formed with director Stephen Spielberg and former Disney head Jeffrey Katzenberg.
GENET, Jean (1910-1986) French author - Jean Genet's writings, which include poetry, the plays "The Balcony" (1956) and "Les Bonnes" (1947) and the novel "Notre Dame des Fleurs" (1943), reflected his criminal past as well as his homosexual desires. According to his biographer, Edmund White, Genet was "a cat's cradle of contradictions . . . a homosexual whose closest friends were women, a world celebrity who lived in crummy railway hotels, the author of a handful of the most sumptuously stylish novels of this century who, after the age of ten, received all of his education in reform schools." Even as he became an internationally known writer, Genet continued his transient life of crime, drug use, prostitution, and depravity. By 1948 he faced a life-sentence in prison, but French president Vincent Auriol pardoned him at the request of Jean COCTEAU, Jean-Paul Sartre, and other important literary figures. In freedom, he continued his vagabond lifestyle, using his publisher's office as a mail drop. The settings for much of Genet's writings are prisons and his characters are often homosexual criminals. His descriptions of sado-masochistic gay sex are graphic, plentiful, and tinged with tenderness. To Genet, homosexuality and criminality were expressions of freedom; parents and the law were slave masters.
Nel film And the band played on, impersonava un uomo morente di AIDS.

GERE, Richard , USA 1949 Actor - The star of "American Gigolo," currently married to model Cynthia Crawford, once told reporters "It's nobody's business but mine who I'm fucking, who I'm not fucking. The rack sheets, the press blurbs, the gossip pages -- it's all crap . . . you can't possibly understand my deepest emotions." Methinks the hunk doth protest too much. In a joint interview for "Premiere" magazine, Gere and Crawford acknowledged the truth behind the rumours (never denied) about Gere's bisexual experiments in the early 1980s. A brave -- and nervous -- Gere went out of his way in the 1991 Oscar telecast to explain to the millions of viewers worldwide what the red ribbons that many were wearing signified. Recently Gere and Crawford took a full-page ad in a London newspaper to proclaim their current "heterosexuality" and to label themselves "very much in love" and "monogamous." Several months later, rumors began to circulate that their marriage was falling apart as they both had affairs.
Gere's films include "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1979), "Days of Heaven" (1978), "American Gigolo" (1979), "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), "Breathless" (1983), and "Pretty Woman" (1990). He starred on Broadway in the 1979 production of "Bent," in which he played a gay inmate in a Nazi concentration camp. He portrayed a gay man dying of AIDS in the film "And the Band Played On."

Gere is a Buddhist disciple of the Dalai Lama and, with composer Philip Glass, founded Tibet House in Greenwich Village.

GIDE, André (1869-1951) French author - André Gide was the first openly homosexual man to receive the Nobel Prize: he received the prize for literature in 1947. It was during a trip to North Africa, where he met Oscar WILDE and Lord Alfred DOUGLAS, that Gide first came to grips with his homosexuality. In "Si Le Grain Ne Meurt," Gide relates how he slept with a boy named Muhammed, and came five times in that single night. The boy was procured for Gide by Wilde. At least one of Gide's friends, poet W. H. AUDEN, chose not to believe the tale, and termed Gide, "a conceited liar." In any case, Gide's North African experience influenced his writings, which exalt honesty, openness, and sincerity. His books represent a virtual war against conformity and rigid thinking. "Cahiers d'Andre Walter" (1891), "Fruits of the Earth" (1897), and "Strait is the Gaite" (1909) were shocking in their style and content. "The Immoralist" (1902) and "The Counterfeiters" (1925) are classics of world literature.
Gide was one of the few people willing to publicly defend Oscar Wilde's literary reputation, especially in the years immediately after Wilde's death. Gide's love life was as unconventional as his writing. At age 47 Gide fell in love with 16-year-old Marc Allegret, who was also involved with Jean COCTEAU.

Following intense affairs with Kerouac and Burroughs, Ginsberg settled down with fellow-poet Peter Orlovsky. Ginsberg maintains the classic tradition of paedophilic poetry, which can be traced to Ancient Greece via medieval England (HILARY), Persia (HAFIZ and NUWAS), Renaissance Italy (BERNI), and 19th century Germany (PLATEN, GEORGE).
GLOEDEN von, W. Germany 1856 photographer - Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden was probably the most popular photographer in the early years of the twentieth century. His exquisite photographs of naked Italian boys in provocative poses sold by the thousands to "collectors" around the world. The Baron's neighbors in Taormina, Italy thought he was a bit peculiar, but didn't complain, as his payment of "modeling fees" kept the local economy going for years. A true marriage of art and economy, if ever there were one.
GRANT, Cary (1904-1986) U.S. actor - Cary Grant and actor Randolph SCOTT lived as a gay couple in Hollywood for many years. Their relationship scandalized Hollywood in the 1930s and outlasted several of their marriages to women. In his even-wilder days as a new arrival from England, Grant had shared a Manhattan apartment with designer ORRY-KELLY. Their parties were notorious among gay society at that time.
Grant also had a sexual liaison with then 29-year old Howard HUGHES. Grant and Hughes remained close for many years, even as Hughes drifted into insanity and became a recluse.
Grant was also the first actor to use the word "gay" to refer to homosexuality in a Hollywood film ("Bringing Up Baby"), while in drag no less. Grant was bisexual, married five times, but was regarded as a gay man by Hollywood insiders throughout his career.
Grant's longtime personal secretary, Frank Horn, was rumored to possess Hollywood's largest collection of gay erotica. In later years,
Grant retired from acting to travel the world, selling a line of perfumes and colognes.
"On the Move"
GUNN, Thom UK 1929 poet - British-born, San Francisco resident, poet Thom Gunn won a prestigious MacArthur "genius" prize and grant (worth $369,000) in 1993. Much of his work has a dark edge, which may be traced to his difficult youth. When he was 15, Gunn and his younger brother discovered the body of their mother, who had killed herself.
"On the Move", published in 1957, is one of his most famous poems:
"On motorcycles, up the road, they come:
Small, black, as flies hanging in heat, the Boys . . . "
Also in 1957, in the preface to his book "The Sense of Movement," Gunn wrote "Je le suis, je veux l'etre." It was daring at that time to come out of the closet, even if in French.
In 1992 Gunn published "The Man With Night Sweats" after four of his friends died of AIDS-related illnesses in one month. (Gunn himself is HIV negative.) He recently published "Troubadour", a quartet of poems written from the perspective of serial murderer Jeffrey Dahmer. His "Collected Poems," published in 1994, run to almost 500 pages. Gunn and his lover, Mike Kitay, have been together since 1952.
