- Bavarian King Ludwig was a nut. He nearly bankrupted
Bavaria by building fairy-tale castles, shared his
"built-in scepter" with a string of male
lovers, and after falling in love with Richard Wagner,
backed extravagant productions of the composer's operas.
Eventually, Ludwig was forced to abdicate, and was led
off to the funny farm, "The Ride of the
