In Cather's case, one of the things not named was her intense, and often unrequited, love for women.

As a student at the University of Nebraska, Cather posed for a time as her imaginary male twin, William. Later she took a job in Pittsburgh, where she met and fell in love with 16-year-old Isabelle McClung. McClung later married, but she and Cather remained close for over 40 years. Although Cather's heart belonged to McClung, her closest relationship was with her lifetime companion, editor Edith Lewis. Cather and Lewis lived together in Greenwich Village for forty years, and arranged to be buried together when they died. The U.S. Postal Service has issued an 8-cent stamp honoring Cather.

Every Sunday evening, the filmmaker hosted gay Hollywood's most popular poolside parties. Cukor never hid -- or advertised -- his sexuality, and for years he openly defied MGM's requirement for a "morals clause" as part of his contracts. On one occasion, gruff studio boss Louis B. Mayer asked Cukor directly if he was homosexual. Cukor's reply: "Dedicated." A stunned Mayer dropped the matter.

Cukor's first job as a director was on "Tarnished Lady" starring Tallulah Bankhead. Later he collaborated with David O. Selznick on many films at RKO and MGM. Selznick hired Cukor to direct "Gone With The Wind" but sacked him after Clark GABLE objected to working under the director, who knew about Gable's occasional forays into same-sex encounters. Cukor went on to great success in a series of elegant dramas and comedies. His credits include many of the greatest films ever made, such as "Dinner at Eight" (1933), "Camille" (1937), "A Star Is Born" (1954) and "My Fair Lady" (1964).

One of his early films, "Sylvia Scarlett" (1937) is a gender-bending comedy featuring Katherine Hepburn as a young girl disguised as a boy. Throughout the picture, confused leading men Cary GRANT and Brian Aherne struggle with their "queer" desire for the young "man." Many of Cukor's other films feature subtle homoerotic elements, in addition to the walk-on roles Cukor gave to many of his good-looking boyfriends.
