- Stephen Spender became associated at Oxford University
with W. H. AUDEN and other writers. His place among the
Oxford poets was assured by the publication of his
"Twenty Poems" in 1930. He was coeditor (with Cyril CONNOLLY) from 1939 to 1941 of "Horizon" magazine, and of "Encounter" from 1953 to 1967. He left "Encounter" when he discovered that the magazine was secretly financed by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. In his later years, Spender lectured widely in Europe, Asia, and the United States. In 1965, he was the first non-American to serve the US Congress as "Consultant in Poetry in English." In 1993, Spender sued American novelist David Leavitt for plagarism. Spender's 1951 autobiography "World Within World" had daringly told the story of his relationship with a man referred to as "Jimmy Younger". Leavitt's novel, "While England Sleeps," drew a bit too heavily on Spender's life story for one of its main characters, "Edward," and the book was withdrawn. Sir Stephen Spender outlasted almost all of his literary comrades, who included Auden, Connolly, C. Day Lewis, and Christopher ISHERWOOD. He died in 1995, age 86. |
