When the Craig family arrived in Australia they settled in a small town known as Dungog (today - approx 3 to 4 hours by car from Sydney). Dungog was established as a military post to help put down bushrangers. After ten years as a wheelwright and builder in Dungog the family moved north to Warwick Queensland. Five hundred miles away by bullock dray. William Craig opened one of the largest and most up-to-date blacksmith and wheelwright businesses ever to be established in the Darling Downs region, and the family became well respected and prominent members of the Warwick community.

Children:

#3. Annie CRAIG m July 1903 James HILL b 6 Oct 1882 Soldiertown, Antrim, Ireland. Their children are;

This family immigrated to the United States in 1915 coming to New York and traveling to California where James older brother, Thomas had come at an earlier date. James was shirtmaker. He probably came from a family of weavers in Ireland. It is family story that they were part of the group of weavers brought into Ireland by Cromwell. It is certain that the family was Protestant, as Joseph Wilfrid "Bill" HILL called himself a staunch Orangeman.

Joseph Wilfrid HILL m Angela Virginia GALLAGHER in Los Angeles, CA in 1927. Now deceased, they are my husband's parents.

My earliest record is the 1850 Cherokee County, Georgia census. James is listed as being 26 and from North Carolina. He was married to Susan Hopgood (or possibly Hobgood). Their children at the time were Louisa age 6 and Sarah age 5 months. They later had Mary Frances (my gggrandmother, who married Nathaniel Jackson FIELDS), John, Monroe, and Davis. I last found James and Susan in the 1880 census in Bartow County, Georgia. Does anyone have any information on these people? I would be more than happy to share what I have.

I supposedly go back to a John and Rachel CRAIG who were in Mercer County, PA in 1808. John supposedly fought with Washington in the American Revolution, and died in Mercer County on or about 21 May 1814. His children are supposedly James, John, William, Henry (may have died in Lundys Lane Battle of War of 1812), Thomas, David, Mathew, Samuel, Mary (married Mr. Parker), Caty (also married a Mr. Parker), Rachel, and Elizabeth.

I come through James. He was born 12 Apr 1801 somewhere in western Pennsylvania. On 26 Sep 1822 in Mercer County, PA he married Elizabeth HASTINGS. James died in Sandy Creek, Mercer, PA on 27 Apr 1847 from wounds he suffered in a vigilante attack. It seems a man in the community booted his wife out and took up with a young woman. The community was incensed about it, and a group undertook to set things right. However, the girl and the man defended themselves. The girl hit James between the shoulders with an axe. He knew he was dying and made out his will, which was probated on 19 May 1847. His widow, Elizabeth, died 19 Jan 1896 in Garner Township, Pottawattamie, IA.

The children of James and Elizabeth:

My line is through Drucilla, so I really only have 3 generations of CRAIG that I know anything about, and 2 of them are really sparse. I will accept any help from anyone, and I would especially like to find descendants of any of the children of James and Elizabeth.

James Craig born 1895 in Chicago, Ill married Pearl Ida Robinson June 3, 1924 in Winnebago, Neb. Pearl Ida Robinson was born 1902 in Rodney, Iowa. Her parents were Alva Eugene Robinson and Lavina Leona "Mina" Logan (have Logan to about 1700).

The family story states that two young boys, one James Craig and the other an unrelated boy named Richard Sandbloom, or Sandblum, were taken in by a German family in the Dakotas or Nebraska. The boys lived and worked with this family. We do not know if these boys were real orphans or indebtured or just what. At the age of 21 each boy received $1,000.00. Richard left and opened a gas station and battery shop in Washington or Oregon. James eventually owned an electric and telephone company believed to be in Rapid City, North Dakota?. James lost his business during the depression.

Richard eventually ended up in Hollywood, California where he owned another gas station. The two boys remained in touch and Richard became "Uncle Richard" to James Craigs children and shared family functions. James, Pearl and family moved to Tahunga, California and Glendale, California. James died when his oldest girl was about to graduate from High School about 1943, he had six children in all, three are still living. Richard married, fathered a daughter who become a professor and it is believed that she went to Denver, Colorado. Richard divorced his wife.

There are no stories of grandparents or Aunts and Uncles to share from the past. I can share only about the families from James and Pearl to the present. I have been unsuccessful in locating a blood line family for this James Craig. I agree that there are a tremendous amount of "James Craig's" out there. Some speculation on these boys has been posted on the Craig List. Several people have mentioned that James and Richard's story is very similar to others of that era who were loaded onto the "Orphan Trains" and shipped West. We are looking at this possibility.

Marion Craig (my great grandmother) was born around 1850-60 (guessing). Married John Kane (Cain) in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland 6/2/1876. They had 3 children, Janet, Isaac & another son. Janet died young (how young I don't know). Isaac came to U.S. in 1907 and became Alexander Cain. His brother also came to U.S., before him, but returned to Scotland after 1907.

I have had no luck in finding Marion's past. Hope she can connect somewhere! Thanks!

I would like to know how to find out more about my 4th ggrandfather, WILLIAM CRAIG of Laurens Co., SC. Supposedly, he married a Frances DESHIELDS (don't know year).

Also, William's son's name was THOMAS CRAIG, ESQ. and he was listed in the South Carolina 1850 census as being 62 years old, which puts his birth date at around 1788.

His son was my great great grandfather, THOMAS YOUNG CRAIG, b 1805 Seneca Co, South Carolina. Besides residing in South Carolina a portion of his life, I know that Thomas Y. Craig didn't start out in Arkansas. However, he spent the latter portion of his life here, first in the northern, and later in the central part of the state (in what is now Saline County). In fact, the burg that he lived in was at first named after him (Craigtown) and is now called Paron (also spelled Paren).

Thomas Y had several wives. His fourth or fifth wife was a woman named Emily Breshears (or Beshears or Boshears). Their fourth child was born in Paron - Cora Craig, my great grandmother. She married James Rufus Tackett.

I am mostly interested in finding anyone else besides me and my mother, Joanne Tackett Herndon, who is interested and/or connected to any of these South Carolina and/or Arkansas Craigs.
