I know that there have been various reports that her parents are Robert and Grizell Craig of Augusta Co., but NOT the same Robert Craig who died in 1788. For many, many years, at least 50 genealogists thought this Robert to be family member of the Craigs who descended from immigrants William and Janet. This has since been disproven; however very little is know by the William-Janet descendents about the Robert who married Grizell and lived in the same vicinity, though a couple miles west. They came to VA shortly before 1741. One source has told me that he believes my Robert was born in Ireland and his father's name is Alexander and he had two other sons, Samuel and John. My Robert was born in 1713 and died in 1749.

Here is the chart for JACOB CRAIG

Jacob CRAIG was apparently a Loyalist from Queens County, NY, who resettled in New Brunswick after the American Revolution. We have been told, but have no proof, that he was the father of the two children listed below. He may have been located in Prince William Parish, York County since that was the first location of William ORSER at the time of his marriage to Mary CRAIG.

Two presumed children of Jacob CRAIG::

A. Mary CRAIG, m abt 1790, William ORSER, b Mar. 1763, Sing Sing (Ossining), New York bp 11 Sep 1763, Tarrytown, New York son of John and Rachel (BULYEA) ORSER. Mary d abt 1800

After serving in the King's American Dragoons in the Revolutionary War, William ORSER came to Prince William,York Co,New Brunswick then moved to Hartland, Carleton County NB,where he died 24 Dec 1844. After Mary CRAIG's death, William m (2nd) abt 1801-1802 Mary BLAKE widow of James CRAIG, daughter of Christopher BLAKE. She was b 6 May 1772, St. John, New Brunswick d 7 May 1856, Hartland, New Brunswick This second marriage also produced six children not listed here.

Children of Mary CRAIG and William ORSER:

1. John b 1791 Prince William, New Brunswick, d 12 Nov 1813, Kingston, Ontario (Killed in the War of 1812)

2. Lydia b abt 1795, d Aug 1871 m 23 Mar 1811 John GIBERSON, son of John GIBERSON and Elizabeth "Betty" BROWN

3. William b 1796, d 28 Nov 1822 m Mary SHAW

4. Ann, (may have been Phoebe Ann) d 12 Nov 1818 m Joshua BISHOP

5. Elizabeth, m James LOVELY

6. Sixth child--not identified

B. James CRAIG m about 1789, Mary BLAKE , daughter of Christopher BLAKE. She was b 6 May 1772, St. John, New Brunswick d 7 May 1856, Hartland, New Brunswick James CRAIG mysteriously disappeared in 1800. It is said that he left the house one day and did not return; nobody every saw or heard of him after that.

Children of James CRAIG and Mary BLAKE:

1. Nancy b 27 Dec 1789 m John LARLEE

2. Phoebe b 27 Dec 1791 m Samuel BISHOP

3. Daniel McSheffery b 19 Dec 1793, m 12 Sep 1821 Elizabeth WHITEHEAD

4. Moriah (Maria) b 7 Mar 1796, m William HALLETT

5. Christopher b 18 Apr 1798 m Mary GIBERSON daughter of John GIBERSON and Elizabeth "Betty" BROWN

6. Jacob McSheffery b 24 May 1800 d 9 Jun 1886, m Ann SHAW in 1820 and Letitia NOBLE in 1872

COLLATERAL LINES: BLAKE, ORSER, GIBERSON, SHAW, BISHOP, LOVELY, LARLEE, WHITEHEAD, HALLETT

RESEARCH NOTES:

"Many had known extreme pressure from rebel insults and persecutions...A variant on the same theme was the case of Privates Christopher and Jacob Craig of the Queens County rebel militia. Mustered to repel the royal forces, they took advantage of an early opportunity to desert and ally themselves with the British." (attributed by footnote to Henry Onderdonk, "Revolutionary Incidents of Queens County" New York, 1846, p.95) (Source: Bell, David Graham, EARLY LOYALIST SAINT JOHN, New Ireland Press, Fredericton, NB, 1983, p. 3.)

"About 1790 William Orser married Mary Craig, and about the same time Mary's brother James Craig married Mary Blake. During the next decade the two families had six children each . In 1800 James Craig mysteriously disappeared. It is said that he left the house one day and did not return; nobody every saw or heard of him after that. At about this time William Orser's wife died, and he subsequently married Mary (Blake) Craig, and this second marriage also produced six children. Although we have been able to name only five Orser children of the first marriage, I feel confident that there were six, because the descendants have made a kind of riddle or conundrum of the situation: How could it be that he had 12 children; she had 12 children; but all together there were only 18 children? " (Source: ORSER, A GENEALOGY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF AERT WILLEMSZEN, Compiled by Daniel Turner, 1975, p. 166-167.)

Other names I am researching

BALMER, CROSSLEY, FAIRLEY, STEEL, KOZUCH, KOWALSKI, SNARSKI, WASZCZUK

According to the 1900 census, Sarah Jane CRAIG and Robert BALMER immigrated to the United Sates in 1888. They adopted another child in 1900 named Thomas CROSSLEY, brother of William James CROSSLEY, husband of Victoria BALMER. Their sister Agnes CROSSLEY was adopted by a William J. CRAIG who I am also interested in researching.

Samuel and Maroa Craig (unknown dates and location, but probably b. 1840s)

Their son:

Jesse Samuel Craig, b. Nov. 1, 1865 in Jefferson Co, Pa., and died Dec. 26, 1927. Buried in Albion, Erie Co., Pa. He married Mary Alta Elizabeth Deriar, b. 1860 in Pont, Pa., and died 1928 in Albion, Pa.

All lived and died in Albion, Pa.

The only collaterol line I'm researching here is Deriar, as I do not know Samuel's wife's name. The Deriar's were also from Albion, Pa.
