Name:Uranus, Georgium Sidus (Georgian Planet), Herschel Position:Seventh Diameter:51118 KM Mass:8.683*1025 KG Temp. range: No. of moons: TWENTY-ONE Distance from sun: 2.87099*109 KM Distance from earth: 2.721*109 KM Time to rotate on axis: Time to orbit the sun: 86 yrs. 5 mon. 24 days 6 hrs. 13 min. Comments: spins on its side, with one pole facing the sun. |
Uranus is the third largest planet in the solar system. It is the first planet discovered in modern times on March,13 1781. Voyager 2 is the first and only spacecraft that visited the planet on January,24 1986.
Uranus' magnetic field is odd in that it is not centered on the center of the planet and it tilted almost 60 degrees with respect to the axis of rotation. It is probably generated by motion at relatively shallow depths within Uranus.
Uranus is mainly composed of 15% hydrogen, rock, various ices and a little helium. The atmosphere is composed of 83% hydrogen, 15% helium and 2% methane. Its core is not rocky, unlike Jupiter and Saturn.
Uranus blue color is the result of absorption of red light by methane in the upper atmosphere. Uranus' 11 rings are very dark composed of fairly large particles ranging up to 10 meters in diameter and dust.
One theory suggests that Uranus was struck by a large object and knocked onto it's side. Although Uranus' polar regionds recieve more energy input from the sun than do its equatorial regions , but still it is hotter at it's equator than at its poles.
