Name:Earth, Tellus, Gaia Position:Third Diameter:12756.3 KM Mass:5.972*1024 KG Temp. range:( -21 oC -> 60 oC ) No. of moons: ONE Distance from sun: 14.967*107 KM Distance from earth: _ Time to rotate on axis: 23 hrs. 56 min. Time to orbit the sun: 12 mon. 5 days 17 hrs. 47 min. Comments: the only habitable planet |
Formed 4600 million years ago, Earth is the densest body in the solar system. Not until the time of Copernicus ( 16th century ) it was understood that the earth was a planet. The right distance from the sun make it the only habitable planet in the solar system.
Magnetic field on the planet is produced by electric currents in the outer core.
Troposphere, Ozone layer, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and Exosphere form the planet's atmosphere. It is about 483 KM thick . 77% of the atmosphere is nitrogen, 21% is oxygen with traces of argon, carbondioxide and watervapour.
The planet is divided into the crust, upper mantle, transition region, lower mantle, outer core and the inner core.Inner core and crust are solid while the outer core and mantle layers are plastic or semi-fluid. The crust varies being thinner under oceans and thicker under continents. The core is mainly iron with traces of oxygen, silicon, magnesium, nickel, sulphur and titanium. Its temperature is about 7227 oC, hotter than the surface of the sun.
71% of earths surface is covered with water. It is the only planet where water exists in liquid form on its surface.
MOONNames: Moon, Luna, Selene, Artemis
Diameter: 3476 KM
Mass: 7.35e22 KG
Orbit:384400 KM from EarthThe only satellite for earth, the moon was first visited by the soviet spacecraft (Luna 2) in 1959. It is the only body visited by humans till now. The first landing was on July,20 1969.
Neither an atmosphere nor a magnetic field do appear on the moons surface.
Tide is one of the effects produced due to the gravitational forces between the earth and the moon.
Time between successive new moons is 29 days 13 hours.
A widely accepted impact theory states that the moon was a part of earth and was separated due to a large collision between the earth and an object as big as mars during the formation of the solar system.
The spacecraft Clementine gave evidence before about the presence of water ice in some deep craters near the moons south pole. But this has been confirmed by another spacecraft named Prospector.
