A bouncing baby boySeptember 27, 2004:
  • HE'S HERE!!!
  • On September 24 at 9:56am, Joshua David Caruso was born. Weighing in at a healthy 7 lbs 2 oz and measuring 19 inches long, this little boy is quite the charmer. We brought him home the next day, and both baby and mommy are doing quite well at home. Hundreds of pictures are sure to be added to the page soon, but in the meantime, here are a couple more for your requisite fawning: Oooh, Aaah, and Awwww.
  • Adjusting to life with a newborn has been something of an adventure. You always hear that you will be sleep deprived, so you try to brace yourself for the late night feedings every three hours. However, Little Josh (ever the innovator) has decided that he wants to be fed every 45 minutes from midnight to 9am. This works out to something like ten to twelve feedings in the course of the night. That's enough to make even the most sane person a little bit loony.
  • Of course, the positives have far outweighed the negatives. We are continually caught just staring at our baby, and it is the consensus of all that Josh (formerly Peabo) is "the cutest baby in the whole wide world". So that's something to be proud of.
  • We know that there are a lot of you who want to see the baby in person. This is understandable, because the pictures do no justice to his immeasurable cuteness. Visitors are welcome, provided you give us advance notice and keep in mind that Josh's feeding schedule does not wait for any guest. Many of you have wondered, "What can I do to help out these terrific kids?" Well, we like food, especially the kind that keeps us from having to cook. Diapers, wipes and other staples of baby-dom are also always considered to be in good taste. Plus, we still need that Eddie Bauer high chair.

September 20, 2004:
  • Happy Anniversary to us! Today is the one year anniversary of our wedding! How quickly time flies when you're waiting for a baby. To commemorate the event, we decided to have some of our wedding cake, since we had frozen the top tier way back in September 2003. However, serving the not-quite-thawed cake was more difficult than it looked, and Chris ended up flinging the first piece onto the floor. Twinkie, never one to pass up a celebration, snatched it up and gobbled it down before we could do a thing. Consider that her revenge for not getting to take part in last year's fun.
  • There was more to the evening than just sharing the cake with the dog. The Carusos brought over a pot roast dinner (complete with two types of potatoes!) so we could have a delicious meal without having to cook. We also watched the DVD of our wedding and got all schmoopy at the appropriate parts.
  • Because we love each other so much, we decided that we would give ourselves a gift that was truly meaningful, truly romantic: twelve pounds of gummy candy. That's right: Renée is getting seven pounds of Gummy Sour Cherry Cola Bottles, and Chris is getting five pounds of Hawaiian Punch Soft and Chewy Candy. The future cavities should be arriving on our porch in a couple of days and should provide many hours of joy and toothaches.
  • No real news on the Peabo front. Tomorrow is the official due date, so everybody cross your fingers and hope for a baby!
Mmmm....floor cake

Percolating PeaboSeptember 4, 2004:
  • We're down to the homestretch -- only about two weeks until Peabo is due! Of course, that really means that the baby could come any day now (or four weeks from now!), so we're pretty much just watching and waiting. We did take some very nice pregnancy portraits of Renée a few days ago, showing her belly in all of its swollen splendor. Chris also made an appearance in a few photos, but he is not nearly as cute.
  • Since our last update, we've been to two baby showers. The first one was thrown by the Lobbyrats at Courtney's house and featured cookout food and inappropriate word games. The second one, held by Vicki Douglas, featured a diaper-clad Chris and much more appropriate word games. We received lots of cool stuff, and thank you notes will be forthcoming.
  • Yesterday we purchased our travel system. Though the one we got (the Graco Glider in the Spectator print) was not our initial choice, we both liked it. Chris particularly liked the easy one-hand folding mechanism, while Renée liked the fact that the print was very 1970's-looking.
  • Lost in all the hubbub of Peabo's impending arrival is another important date quickly approaching: our one-year wedding anniversary! On September 20th, we will celebrate 365 days of hitched-ness (366 actually, since this was a leap year). We've also recently celebrated one year of home ownership, though that celebration really just consisted of looking at a calendar and saying, "A year ago we bought our house." However, we hope to get some sort of cool thing for our home as a house-iversary present to ourselves, and (Peabo willing) we will also try to do something nice on our anniversary.
  • And last, but oh-so-certainly not least, we made a delicious pie the other day from a Woman's Day recipe. It is a Mint Chocolate Ice Cream Pie, and we have enjoyed it thoroughly. We would invite everybody to come over and try it, but we are selfish and are going to eat it all ourselves.

August 7, 2004:
  • There was a mysterious arrival on our porch last night. Renée looked outside and there was a large box containing a changing table sitting outside our door! Clearly, someone got it for us off of our registry, but there's no indication of who did it, so if you got us a changing table, thanks!
  • Yesterday we got some McDonald's Happy Meals and got two of the Ronald McDonald Teenie Beenie Babies. If anyone has the Hamburglar one and wants to trade for one of our Ronalds, email us and we'll see if we can work something out.
  • Our new digital camera arrived in the mail this week, and we have been entertaining ourselves by taking pictures of anything and everything. It has been quite fun and has resulted in many lousy pictures and the occasional silly movie.
  • After many months of disuse, we have finally begun playing the Sims again! With this new computer we're actually able to play the expansion sets that we bought over a year ago. Watch out SimCity -- the Carusos are back in the neighborhood! Now if only we could afford floors for our Sims' house...
I'm lovin' it

So cute and assembledJuly 30, 2004:
  • After months of deliberation, we have finally gotten a crib. Now little Peabo will have a place to rest -- that is, after Chris finishes assembling it. Construction halted for a week after Chris found that one of the pieces was bad (although Renée was convinced that the only bad thing was the person building the crib). However, thanks to a little help from Chris's dad, progress is again underway.
  • We took part in the weekend childbirth/newborn care class, where we got to practice breathing, swaddling, and various labor positions. At one point in the class, the instructor gave us all Dove Promises candy, and the message inside Renée's piece said "Celebrate the child within you" -- a very appropriate inscription indeed.
  • Last weekend we headed to Athens to visit with the Lobbyrats and had a day of gorging: first, Chinese food at Hunan; next, gigantic root beer floats at Courtney's house; finally, chicken fingers at Guthrie's. We could have practically rolled home.

July 14, 2004:
  • After over six years of relatively good behavior, our computer finally died on us a couple of weeks ago, forcing us to have to get a new one -- how tragic. Fortunately, this new computer is fast enough to run The Sims: Unleashed, a video game that we bought about a year ago and have never been able to play.
  • Last night we attended an Infant + Child Safety/CPR course and got to practice our lifesaving skills. Next up: a two-day Newborn Care class this weekend. Peabo's expected arrival is only 10 weeks away!
  • This week Renée's coworkers threw a surprise baby shower for her. They gave us several outfits for Peabo as well as some money for baby stuff. And Renée just thought they were having another meeting!
  • We saw Spiderman 2 on Saturday and were underwhelmed by it. A few too many shots of women shrieking in terror, if you ask us.
  • We've got a guest this week -- Munchkin has come to stay with us while the Carusos are in Florida. Twinkie is having a great time being a pest and having another body to lounge on. While playing outside yesterday, the dogs met a turtle and didn't quite know what to make of it. They sniffed it until it tucked into its shell and wouldn't show its face anymore.
  • By the way, who knew there were so many CPR mannequins out there? Check out this link to see a bunch of them -- there's even one called Fat Old Fred.
That's Newborn Kim

Alfred Hitchcock Presents...June 23, 2004:
  • Just a small update now with hopes (albeit faint ones) or more regular postings to continue:
  • Renée is now 27 weeks along in the pregnancy, meaning Baby Peabo weighs about two pounds. This is the most recent picture of the baby, taken about seven weeks ago, so you can only imagine how cute Peabo must be now! Renée even knows Peabo's gender, though Chris is still trying to keep from finding out. So if you know what Peabo is, don't tell Chris!
  • In other news, Chris just finished up a month-long job on an independent feature film called A Complex Occupation, coming soon to a Blockbuster near you. He also got to go to Los Angeles for a day to attend a luncheon at the American Society of Cinematographers clubhouse, where he met many famous DPs. How exciting!
  • Renée has recently begun taking a prenatal yoga class in an effort to stay healthy and meet some other pregnant women at the same time. Each week the instructor reads a birth story from a former student explaining how the yoga training helped the student get through the labor. Renée has enjoyed the classes so far, though she's not too sure about the strange moaning the instructor has them do. Fortunately, Chris will also be given the opportunity to moan strangely at a labor and delivery class held at the yoga center. Should be interesting.

February 18, 2004:
  • So yeah, it's been a long time. However, this time we have a good excuse for the delay: Renée is pregnant! The due date that the doctors gave us is September 21 -- one day after our first wedding anniversary! We've been so caught up in baby stuff (plus Renée's tendency to fall asleep at 9:30) that we just haven't felt like updating in a long time. But today we have some exciting baby stuff to share.
  • We went in for the first ultrasound and we are proud to show the very first picture of Baby Peabo! (And no, the baby will not actually be named Peabo, but since we don't know if the baby is a boy or a girl yet, Peabo is a good placeholder -- especially since the baby looks like a peanut right now.) For those of you who aren't sure, the baby is the large blob in the middle of the dark area. We have helpfully highlighted Peabo with a circle. For those who want a larger view, click the picture.
  • That's about it. There's been way to much going on otherwise to even attempt to catch up, so you'll have to live with this little bit of information.
Looks just like Daddy

At least we're smarter than themJanuary 18, 2004:
  • On Friday we had the Dish Network installed, and since then we've been rather pathetic -- all we've done for the past three days is watch television. We've even managed to catch an entire season's worth of Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, thanks to a weekend marathon on MTV. Sure, it's kinda dumb and silly, but we're newlyweds too, so that makes it okay.
  • Our other new reality TV obsession is The Apprentice. It's sorta like Survivor gone corporate. There's this guy on there named Sam who is so completely weird and annoying that we tune in each week hoping that he'll be gone. Alas, no luck yet. This week The Apprentice airs directly opposite American Idol. What should we watch? Such conflict!
  • Earlier this week, we celebrated Chris's dad's birthday with a fancy dinner of Stouffer's macaroni-and-cheese. Of course, compared to Kraft or Velveeta, Stouffer's is the inferior mac-and-cheese. But for some reason Chris's dad prefers it, and since it was his birthday, he got to pick the meal. Just wait until Chris's next birthday, though......

January 12, 2004:
  • Tonight we watched one of Chris's Christmas movies, Pirates of the Caribbean. Renée especially liked Orlando Bloom and the evil zombie monkey; Chris preferred Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom's rakish hat.
  • Yesterday we were sad to have to give Munchkin back to her actual family. The house just doesn't seem to be quite as active without the two dogs scampering together. Twinkie didn't seem to miss her as much as we do, but then again, this means she doesn't have to compete for our attention anymore.
  • Chris made a delightful banana pudding last night, complete with layers of Nilla Wafers and Cool Whip. However, it wasn't just right until today, when the wafers had gotten all soggy and mushy. THEN it was perfect.
  • It snowed on Saturday! Granted, you could barely see it falling and it melted as soon as it touched anything, but in Georgia, you gotta get excited about whatever you get.
Yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

Weaseling out of things is important to learn!January 6, 2004:
  • Tonight Chris's dad and Hannah came over to drop off Munchkin, who didn't seem quite as sad to be left here this time -- probably because we let her sleep on the bed. Twinkie occasionally has a problem with this, but when they settle down, they're quite the cute pair, snuggling at the foot of the bed. Now if only they would leave some room for us....
  • Also visiting this week is Mickey, Hannah's mouse. We've never mouse-sat before, so we're a little worried that he's going to pick this week to hop out of the cage and nestle himself inside one of Renée's shoes. Hopefully, though, Mickey's visit will be an uneventful one.
  • Chris's dad brought over Chris's final birthday present -- the entire first series of the Simpsons busts by Sideshow Toys. The four statues -- Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa -- are now happily displayed on the shelf in our kitchen. Oh glorious day!
  • Chris has recently applied for two new jobs, including a job as an Associate Professor of Film at Georgia Perimeter College. Wouldn't that be nice -- a chance for Chris to corrupt the youth of Georgia and get paid for it!

January 5, 2004:
  • Well, that's a gap, isn't it?
  • We had a happy holiday season, complete with Christmas Eve with the Tingles, Christmas Day with the Carusos, Chris's birthday at our own house, a mini-get-together on the 27th, and New Year's Eve with the Lobbyrats. Some of the highlights:
    • Mike receiving a box with 22 pounds of Chicklets and 100 blank CDs -- and GUESSING the contents before opening it
    • David confusing the words "massage" and "massacre" during a game of Catchprase
    • Kevin shrieking and cursing during a game of slap solitaire
    • Chris and David playing videogames until 5am while Renée dozed on the couch
    • Courtney, Renée and Chris setting off fireworks in the Ingle's parking lot and then scurrying like high schoolers
There are many more details that could be given about all of these events, but in the interest of avoiding a ridiculously long entry, we'll just say this: they were fun.
  • Twinkie had a houseguest last week: Munchkin came to visit for a few nights while the Carusos were out of town. After some initial snapping, the two doggies settled down and behaved very well, with only a minimum of growling and bear-like posturing. This is good because Munchkin is coming over again this week while the Chris's family goes on a cruise.
  • Work on the porch nears its completion. The flooring has been all torn up and replaced with fresh new plywood, a far cry from the rotten wood that ate Chris's dad's leg all the way to the hip one night.
  • In other excitement, we now own not one but two 2-player games for our Playstation 2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Simpsons Road Rage. Now Chris can drag Renée into his geekiness with much more ease.
Turtle Power!
