Chris and Renée

June 13, 2006:
  • On this day, history was made. Josh went to his very first movie! We took him to an afternoon showing of Cars, and he did better than Mama & Daddy had ever hoped. With a little help from some snacks and Hi-C, Josh sat through the entire two hours! No tantrums! Huzzah!! He was far better behaved than the elderly couple sitting behind us, who kept up a running commentary of the action for their grandchildren.
  • Afterward, we had a celebratory dinner of Chick-fil-A, with Josh devouring an entire kids' meal on his own. Our little guy is growing up.
  • Josh's success at the movies is due largely in part to his current obsession with all things vehicular. He loves his cars, and doesn't go anywhere without one in hand, including the bathtub. Since our last post, his vocabulary has expanded to include many things that go, including "SUV," "combine," "helicopter" and "fire engine."
  • Since we're mentioning his verbal prowess, we should tell you he is also putting together short sentences, such as "Read my book," "Mama, help!" and (during the movie) "That car's sad."
  • After a five-month hiatus, Josh has enrolled in classes at The Little Gym again. He is now a Beast, encouraged to perform such feats as bear-walking on the parallel bars and popping bubbles with his nose. It seems like it was so long ago that he was just a Little Bug who could hardly even crawl six feet along the mat. Sigh.
  • In non-Josh-related news, we've had a major advancement on the home improvement front: a door!! Thanks to Papa, our screened porch is now actually enclosed, barring the entrance of easily confused birds. This comes after a frightening rendezvous with a trapped baby hawk, and an even more disturbing incident with a successfully suicidal cardinal. Now hopefully the wildife will stay where it belongs: outside and alive.
Vroom, vroom!

Some bunny loves me!April 17, 2006:
  • Hope everyone had a happy Easter! We certainly did. It was a day filled with family, fun, green eggs and ham. And eggs of other colors as well.
  • First, Josh awoke to find that the Easter bunny had paid him a visit! There was a basket of goodies in his room, and eggs hidden in the living room. Mysterious!
  • Then it was on to Grandpa and Grandma's house, where Uncle Mike joined us for a tasty lunch. That silly Easter bunny got confused and left fun presents for Josh at this house as well, plus another batch of eggs in the front yard. Astounding!
  • After a brief nap, we headed to Conyers to have dinner with Nana, Papa, Kate, & Hannah. Well, that wacky bunny must have been hopping under the influence, because he left even more cool stuff there, plus eggs in the backyard! Zany!
  • After the egg-hunting festivities, Josh met two new little friends, Lucien and Anastasia, who live next door to Nana and Papa. Everyone had a nice frolic in the backyard. The the Zehners and Ramseys arrived to share in dessert and a reading of Moo, Baa, La La La. As nighttime approached, an exhausted Josh requested "Home. Nap!" Wisely, we complied.

April 1, 2006:
  • Today Josh went to his very first Easter egg hunt. It was held out at the plaza at Stonecrest Mall. Josh found 11 eggs - not bad for an 18 month old! Most of them had assorted candy inside, which Mama and Dada will be kind enough to eat for him. It was a little wet out, and Josh found the "muck" just as interesting as the eggs.
  • Shortly after the egg hunt, there was a tragic occurence. Namely, a haircut. Dada butchered Josh's beautiful bangs, while Mama hacked the back of his hair into a jagged mess. Professional help will be sought on Monday. Meanwhile, let's speak of happier things....
  • Josh has learned quite a few new words since we updated last, and is experimenting with the mechanics of sentences. It's not unusual for him to present one of us with a sippy cup, for example, and say, "Milk. Lid. Stuck. Open!!" He is also learning about cause and effect. When he sees geese in the yard, he shouts "Geese! Poop, poop, poop." And he's learned which objects go with his favorite people: when Mama picks up the phone, he shouts "Nana!" When he sees a red car in the driveway, it's "Andma!" (he's still working on the 'Gr' sound.) And when a certain yellow cartoon character bumbles onto the screen, it's good old "Omer."
  • This past Tuesday, Josh participated in a study about name recognition and unfamiliar objects at the Emory Child Study Center. Our little guinea pig played with the center's toys like a pro and wasn't shy or scared at all. In exchange for about 20 minutes of his time, Josh was rewarded with a "Child Scientist" certificate and a ladybug T-shirt. Way cool swag.
Look, Dada! Muck!

Pudding: a treat for the pores.January 9, 2006:
  • A beautiful day in the neighborhood, weather-wise. After a family trip to Publix, Chris went to work while Josh and Renee went to the park to enjoy the sunshine with some other Atlanta Mommas and kiddos. Josh was particularly interested in one little boy on a bike with training wheels. He trotted along behind him, pointing and shouting "Bus!"
  • Josh's vocabulary is growing exponentially these days. His newest utterances: "dark," "faffle" (waffle), "off" and "Go-Gurt." Yes, our little one is now brand-specific in his snack requests. When he is done with his faffle and Go-Gurt, he feeds his leftovers to "Eee-ee," then demands "Up!" Most alarmingly, Chris and Josh have begun to mutter things to each other about "Vader." Welcome to the dark side.
  • Speaking of evil, we have discovered the most addictive game on the Internet: Qwyzzle. It's quite time-consuming....and educational, too. Sort of like Josh.

January 7, 2006:
  • It's been a wild and crazy month. Josh had his 15 month checkup, and the new stats are: weight 21 lbs 15 oz, height 31 inches, and head....really big (94th percentile!). Way to grow Joshman!
  • David and his girlfriend Kate joined us for much of the holiday break. We all took Josh to Stone Mountain to see part of the laser show and the festively decorated Crossroads. On this outing, we discovered a surefire way to calm Josh's crankiness: David flips his hair while Chris shouts "Fop!" in a falsetto. Whatever works!
  • We had a wonderful Christmas, spending the first half of the day with the Tingles and the latter half with the Carusos. Josh got many presents and basked in the adoration heaped upon him. For a week afteward, we also basked in leftovers. Thanks Moms & Dads!
  • On the 26th, the Carusos and Bumpa as well as cousins Anne, Geoff, Will, and Ethan came to visit for Chris's 27th birthday! Chinese food and desserts were enjoyed by all.
  • Rounding out the festivities, we celebrated New Year's Eve for Josh a few hours early at the Carusos' (more Chinese food, games, and sparklers), then returned home where Chris and David had to use a wrench to open our bottle of sparkling grape juice at midnight. Twelve hours later, we had our first lunch of 2006 at the Tingles' house. A whirlwind of family fun.
WHAZZZZZUUUUPPP??!!?
