[Answers: Schwarzenegger - Klemperer]      [Answers: Leno - Paul]
Most of us have heard of the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game - you connect one actor to another through a series of film or TV appearances. It was originally designed to connect Kevin Bacon to any actor alive within six steps, but the premise of the game is now often used at parties and around office water coolers to connect any two actors to each other. An example: in order to connect two completely dissimilar actors such as Steven Seagal and Karl Malden, you only need three steps: a.) Seagal was in "Above the Law" with Sharon Stone, who b.) was in "Basic Instinct" with Michael Douglas, who c.) was in numerous episodes of "Streets of San Francisco" with Malden.

When doing research for this site, it occurred to me that given the number of big names Gabrielle Miller has appeared with, any actor or actress could be connected to her within way less than six steps - so I set out to give it a shot. I explained the idea to my amazingly supportive better half, who knows Gabrielle is my favorite actress and was kind enough to buy me the "Corner Gas" first-season DVD set as a surprise gift. I asked her to name fifty people who have appeared in any English-language film or TV show, and to try to make it tough. Anyone was fair game as long as they've appeared in any known production, even if only as a non-actor celebrity horrifically botching a cameo (Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre in "Something About Mary," for instance).

My better half liked the idea, took a day to come up with a list, and then threw everything she had at me - including professional athletes, foreign actors and actresses, rock musicians, politicians and talk show hosts. Not once did I need anywhere close to all six steps to connect the performer in question to Gabrielle, and I'm not even good at this sort of game. If you like TV and movies and are a fan of Gabrielle's, I hope you have as much fun with this idea as I have.

Here are the rules and explanatory notes you'll need to play along:

1.) Any actor or any celebrity in a cameo who has ever appeared in an English language movie or TV series found on tvtome.com, movietome.com or imdb.com can be used to try to connect to Gabrielle within six steps.

2.) You only get six steps to complete the challenge - but you'll probably find you won't need all six.

3.) Only television series and movies may be used. No talk shows like David Letterman's or Jay Leno's, no variety shows like "Saturday Night Live."

4.) If a television series is used, Gabrielle and the actor in question must have appeared in the same episode. If to connect Gabrielle to another actor you need to use Jim Byrnes, for example, you can use "Due East" or "Starlight," but not "Highlander" - because although Byrnes was a "Highlander" series regular, he did not appear in either of the episodes in which Gabrielle did.

5.) Having seen only about half of Gabrielle's work, I have to operate under the assumption that the lists of credits I have found on the Internet are accurate. For example, if asked to connect Gabrielle to Sylvester Stallone, I would first use Gabrielle's appearance in "Jane's House," in which James Woods appears, and then use "The Specialist," in which both Woods and Stallone appear. I have not seen "Jane's House," though, so I were to learn that James Woods wasn't actually in the movie, I would simply add another step: Gabrielle was in "Inspectors 2: A Shred of Evidence" with Louis Gosset Jr, Gossett Jr. was in "Diggstown" with Woods, and Woods was in "The Specialist" with Stallone. If you see any errors along these lines in the solutions I provide, drop me a line at
[email protected] so that I can add the necessary extra steps.

6.) In the interests of full disclosure, I should point out that in actuality my better half had to come up with a list of 54 names, not 50. She doesn't know Gabrielle's career as well as I do, so she came up with a few names that I had to reject because they were actually in some of the same productions as Gabrielle (Barry Bonds, Martin Sheen, Brian Dennehy and Rae Dawn Chong). No one was rejected because I couldn't fulfill the challenge; the first 50 names she offered who weren't in any of the same shows as Gabrielle was were accepted and are listed here on the site, along with the solutions.
7.) In parentheses after the actors' and actresses' names, you'll find the number of steps I needed to connect the performer in question to Gabrielle.

8.) As I alluded to earlier, I'm not an expert at this game - I simply went with the first solutions that I came up with in six steps or less - so there are probably faster solutions then some of the ones above two steps that I'm providing here. If you can come up with any, you know my address.

9.) If you've got a challenge for me, send it my way. After I solve it I might just put it up on this site.

10.)  When trying this game yourself, a useful (if not obvious) hint is to start with the bigger names Gabrielle has appeared with, and there's quite a few big ones: Martin Sheen, Cybill Shepherd, James Woods, Brian Dennehy, Robert Forster, David Caruso, Michael Madsen, Olympia Dukakis, Robert Blake, Leslie Nielsen and others.

Here's the list that my better half gave me to try to connect to Gabrielle. Numbers in parentheses indicate how many steps it took me to do it. You can just always go straight to subsequent pages to see my solutions, but if you're a fan of Gabrielle's why not give these challenges a try yourself before going to
