FRIEND OF A FRIEND
EPISODE 45 - FRIEND OF A FRIEND: "Hank stages a sting operation to show Lacey that an old friend of hers from college is rude."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: A true highlight of the third season, and an episode I watched three or four times in a row before even bothering to move on to the next one. Not since "
Tax Man" (season 1, episode 2) has a guest star been so good with a major role in an episode, and although I have been a fan of Kevin MacDonald for years, I dare say that Amy Price Francis, who played Connie (Lacey's shrew of a friend), was actually better. She was the comedic MVP of this episode, whereas Eric Peterson barely beat out MacDonald for the same honor in "Tax Man." The show has had some very good guest stars handle major roles (MacDonald, Mike Wilmont, Aurora Browne, Deanna Milligan), but never before has one absolutely stolen an episode like this. This is the only episode in the show's history in which the guest star is the funniest person in the episode - high praise, because the regular cast was operating at its usual high level.

Side plots include a bogus customer loyalty program created by Wanda to shut up Oscar (and, eventually, everyone else in the town) and Davis offense Karen by saying that she wouldn't be good at undercover work.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The final scene, in which Wanda squares off with Connie. If Corner Gas has any weakness, minor though it may be, it's that the final scene / joke in an episode is almost always a letdown compared to rest of the episode (very few episodes escape this - not even the classic "
Grad 68" could). This is actually the best episode ending of the series to date, barely beating out the classic endings of "Hook, Line and Sinker" and "Doc Small."

MEMORABLE LINE: "All I know is your friend's a bitch" from Emma to Lacey.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: I particularly liked how she did Lacey's reaction upon hearing who Connie was engaged to, and she really cracked me up with her motions and facial expression when Hank was trying to play what was supposed to be a tape of Connie being rude.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: "I leave, and don't help you" from Karen when Hank asks her what her idea is regarding the Connie situation.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) Connie calling Davis a "hefty fella" and making a crack about ChiPs.

2.) Connie saying "really nice meeting you" after her rude remark to Brent upon meeting him.

3.) Connie's remarks to Paul and Hank at the bar.

4.) The flashback to Davis' "casual conversation" with Oscar.

5.) Hank explaining to Karen why she'd be good at undercover work.

6.) Karen's words to Hank as she leaves.

7.) Wes making his case for a higher of level customer card, and Wanda's quick reaction.

8.) Connie's reaction to Oscar asking her to pass her the ketchup.

9.) Connie's "distressed" call for police help.

10.) Connie ripping Davis' policing skills, especially her remark about a piece of ham. The "ham" remark was a good example of absolute perfect delivery of a line.

11.) Davis taking issue with being called "lazy" by Connie, even though she also called him "incompetent."

12.) Connie shooting down Emma when Emma tries to introduce herself.

13.) Connie shooting down Hank when he asks her how she likes Dog River.

14.) Lacey smiling and swaying to the tune of Hank's taped singing.

15.) Hank blaming Karen for the taping scheme, saying "you know how emotionless and cold she is."

16.) Connie overhearing Lacey saying "I guess I hang out with her because I feel sorry for her" about Connie, along with Lacey's awkward response.

17.) Connie asking Lacey if she's still be Connie's maid of honor, Lacey saying yes, and Connie's reaction.

18.) Wanda squaring off with Connie at the end of the episode.
