TAX MAN
EPISODE 2: TAX MAN - "Hank helps Brent's dad stay one step ahead of a tax auditor and everyone gets a lesson in proper article use."

This episode features Kevin MacDonald ("Kids in the Hall") as Marvin Drey, and Dan Matheson (CTV Newsnet) as himself.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: A hilarious episode which allows the viewer to get to know the three characters which weren't really given heavy coverage in the debut episode. You get to know Karen a bit better, see Davis' tendency to go ballistic over trivia, and begin to learn that Wanda is the town brain. Particularly funny are Oscar's eruptions at Marvin, and Lacey's quick, none-too-subtle change of attitude when she learns what Marvin does for a living.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: At 16:39, when Marvin interrupts Brent and Lacey to explain how Lacey can give free coffee to the police and write it off on her taxes. Kevin McDonald's delivery here is a perfect job of portraying a nerd's attempt to be cool.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: She does a great job as Lacey pretends to be intimidated by Karen to get Karen off the hook with Davis (19:02).

MEMORABLE LINES:

1.) From Lacey (3:03): "Look, if Marlin Brando and the Wild Bunch roll in here and start tossin' ketchups around, I'll buy you a coffee, okay?
2.) From Hank (10:15): "Two words: blackmail."
3.) From Brent, talking about how Hank can help Oscar out of his tax troubles (11:34): "You should just seduce this guy. Whaddya say, Hank, take one for the team?"
4.) Here's one that has certainly never been said by any human in the history of Earth before this show, from Karen (12:37): I gotta go. I don't wanna end up getting shunned or shot in the face or sniffing women."
5.) At 15:36, in response to Oscar's "My taxes pay his damn salary," Brent comes back with "Okay, Dad, you gotta stop paying everybody's salary. You're only one man."

FUNNIEST SCENE IN THIS EPISODE: At 17:48 when a drunken Hank interrupts Brent and Marvin at the bar. Particularly funny is his stunned reaction after Marvin deciphers his lame attempt to communicate secretly with Brent in Pig Latin.

BLOOPERS:

1.) When Marvin and Brent are talking near the gas pump, 1:33 into the episode, look at the business card in Marvin's pocket. At 1:38 it sinks, and at 1:44 it's even higher than it was at 1:33.

2.) At 1:50, in response to Brent's "Ah, the tax man," Marvin corrects his article usage by saying "A tax man." At this point the camera switches back to Brent and there's a split-second shot of a guy with a green jacket and grey cap exiting the Ruby. The camera switches back to Marvin as he gives his explanation of article use, and then back to Brent, and at this point you can see the same guy who exited the Ruby eight seconds ago now twenty feet away from it, approaching the door this time.
