10 January 1945.
Steaming as before on anti-submarine patrol at the entrance to
Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, P.I., in company with U.S.S. SUESENS,
U.S.S. GILLIGAN, and the U.S.S. OBERRENDER.
0609 - "Flash red". Unidentified aircraft in vicinity.

Pilot: 2nd Lt Sei Hashimoto of the Seika
Tai, Japanese Imperial Army
Seika Tai is the name of the three planes that were part of
Hashimoto-san's group that day.
The information given in the War Diary states that the aircraft
was identified as a "Nell/Kyuuroku chuukoh" (Mitsubishi
G3M Bomber). However, according to Captain Takehisa Kamya, JMSDF
(Retired), no Imperial Navy aircraft participated in Kamikaze
attacks on this day. All Kamikaze attacks were carried out by
Imperial Army pilots. His research shows that the aircraft was
actually a "Nick/Toryu" (Kawasaki KI-45 2-seat
Fighter).
My sincere appreciation to Kamya-san for helping me in my
research.
0710 - Enemy twin-engine
bomber, identified as a Nell, seen approaching from seaward,
bearing about 300º T, distance, about 1000 yards, altitude about
25 feet over the water. Commenced firing with port 20 MM and
forward 40 MM guns. Many hits were observed and the aircraft took
fire. Flames were observed coming from the port engine and wing.
Plane struck superstructure about frame 85, portside, its port
wing carrying away No. 6 and No. 8 20 MM mounts and stack. Its
starboard wing carried away screened speed light mast just
forward of after 40 MM director mount, and No. 5 and No. 7 20 MM
mounts were carried away. Torpedo tubes damaged, port flagbag and
various radio antennae carried away, whaleboat destroyed.
Fuselage of plane continued on and smashed in flames about 100
