Vibe Coffee House
Cedar Falls

Featured Reader:
Myrna Sandvik

Signup for the open mic begins @ 7 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Limited slots are available, so readers are encouraged to sign up early and read your best five minutes of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.  Singer-songwriters are also welcome.  The open mic begins at 7:30 p.m.  The featured reader takes the stage between 8:00 and 8:30 (depending on how many open mic readers there are). After the reading, there will be a brief question and answer session.

Myrna Sandvik is the author of R.F.D. Iowa: A Collection of Poems (Ice Cube Press).  Her collection of poems includes many brief “snapshots” of growing up on a traditional family farm and later moving to a city-oriented lifestyle. The entire backdrop of the work is the changing Iowa landscape which reflects fewer and fewer single-family farm operations. Sandvik currently teaches adult creative writing at the Hearst Center for the Arts.  You can read a sample of her work below.

Vibe is located at 909 W. 23rd St. in Cedar Falls on the second floor of Bought again Books.  Persons needing access accommodation should call 266-7115 by the day before the event.  For more information, contact Jim O'Loughlin.

"Water Witcher"

by Myrna Sandvik

Uncle Orr was a water witcher. His magic

hands knew where water flowed. He told

all the neighbors where to dig their wells.

Pacing his grid across a field, holding

his witching stick before him, he’d say,

“Stake this line. Dig anywhere on it.

You’ll hit water. Best spot is right here.”

He would mark the dirt with his heel

and walk away. There was always water.

He never missed.

After family campfire stories, I cut the fork

from a small sapling. At wedding procession

pace, I stepped onto the bridge, and joked,

“If I were Uncle Orr, I could tell there is water

here.” Over the water, the wand quickened

in my hands. Above the stream, it twisted

and pointed straight down. After crossing

it was lifeless. The boys tried, but the stick

was dead. Again and again I witched.

I loved the magic.
