Featured Reader: Cherie Nelson, aka "J,U.S. Chillin'"

Cherie Nelson, aka "J,U.S. Chillin,'" is a columnist and graphic artist for the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier.  She is the founder and host of SaYes2poetry, a community poetry program that embraces the art of spoken word, and host of the weekly SaYes2poetry radio program on KBOL 100.1 FM in Waterloo.  Nelson is a member of the Iowa City Poetry Slam Team and has competed in the National Poetry Slam Competition and numerous other poetry slam festivals.

Before Nelson’s reading, join the Cedar Valley’s longest running creative writing open mic. Signup for the open mic begins @ 7 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Limited slots are available, so readers are encouraged to sign up early and read your best five minutes of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.  Singer-songwriters are also welcome.  The open mic begins at 7:30 p.m.  The featured reader takes the stage between 8:00 and 8:30 (depending on how many open mic readers there are). After the reading, there will be a brief question and answer session.

Vibe is located at 909 W. 23rd St. in Cedar Falls on the second floor of Bought again Books.  Persons needing access accommodation should call 266-7115 by the day before the event.  For more information, contact Jim O'Loughlin.

Michael+Angelou=us

by Cherie Nelson

Inspired by M.T.A.

Dedicated to all named

Michael in the USA

In my meantime, my downtime

or just my free time

my heart wanders

It travels to a destination unknown

Just me, myself and I

tripping over the milestones

A place where I am alone>

Separated from the world

Detached from physical existence

And isolated from stress

Just standing with the stars

In the solar system

Among the clouds

Waiting to be blessed

Please understand

This poetess seeks knowledge

Answers

I am on a quest

To have a one on one dialogue

With the Most High

Anticipating a reply

A response

A why

I could contact and submit

Beseech an affirmative definite

To determine if you and I

Are the opposite

Or

What I suspect... kindred spirits

Much wisdom I was birthed with

Serves as a benefit

So when I exhale

my spit

Be sharp witted

With humility and modesty

I am quick with it

And if it don't make sense

I simply omit it

Michael means likened unto God

The master of the universe

Anointed you from birth

an archangel

A high-ranking superior

A messenger

Also considered a saint, unique

Painted by the Greeks

Embraced by Islam

From Egypt to Mozambique

You chose me

and piqued

My curiosity

So it would be less than me

Not to pursue

This destiny

Me

Considered to be

Similar to Maya

So call me Angelou

Born in 1928

Only she knows

About the melodies that flows

From the caged bird

All God's children Need Traveling shoes

Be the reason my poems

Reflect poetic rhythm and blues

In a transparent state

I reiterate

About my meantime, my downtime

or just my free time

Why my heart wanders

And travels to a destination unknown

And the wisdom I was birthed with

Has shown

That Michael plus Angelou

Produced an artistic Romeo

The combination of the two

Be the definition of me & you

This journey

This trip

This tour

Makes me sure

This experience

is a part of my existence

It's significant

and whether or not it's a continuance

I thank you for your presence

Your advice

Suggestions and guidance

I now have my Why

Now Please Give Me A

Cool Drink of Water

Before I die!
