Ranks help a person gain more bilities, missions and other job classes. Within the game, you are sent on a few missions, if you speak with the NPC's (non-playable characters) that is. When you complete the missions, you get a rank. If you complete your ninth mission, for example, you get rank 4, which allows you to go for high ranked jobs, like dark-night or Paladin. Of course, to even stand a chance of finishing mission 9, you have to be at level 35.
Most people decide to do missions with friends, but there is one thing you have to remember: 1 key per person (or any item for that matter). For example, lets say you and your alliance (18 people total) want to defeat the dragon of mission nine. Well, you have to get through the door that is locked, and guess what. Their are only a few monsters in that dungeon that carry those keys. Which mean, you will have to battle until you get 16 keys to even be able to go through the doors. And then, after all that, you will have to defeat the dragon a number of times (he only comes out at night, and its only night time every hour, which means hours of gameplay to try to finish mission 9 alone). However, there is 1 plus to all that battling: Gil. Besides the money that you get from the monsters, you get 5,000 gils (yes that is a heck of alot of money) and the title of rank 4. After that, you are able to proceed to the other missions and to the other more desireable jobs (Dark Night, Ranger or Paladin). If you want to be a summoner or other high magic class, you will have to complete still another set of mission.
