In
an effort to further pursue the promotion of NGV's
in the country, the Department of Energy in
cooperation with other government entities and the
private sector lined a couple of projects concerning
the use of natural gas in vehicles. The PNOC-EDC
through its Energy Research and Development Center (ERDC)
will implement a project entitled "Utilization
of CNG as Transport Fuel". The project will
involve the conversion of several public utility
buses in cooperation with NELBUSCO a local bus
company based in Isabela to run on Natural Gas.
NELBUSCO has committed two of their buses for
conversion to NGV. Also,
the DOST-PCIERD has developed a project entitled
"A Pilot Test of NGV Technology in Isabela"
to support the Philippine government efforts to
promote development and utilization of alternative
and clean fuel technology. The project will address
numerous issues on NGV technology. First,
a need to investigate if conversion could be
adaptable to indirect type diesel and spark-ignition
engines. Second
is the acceptability of the technology once
infrastructure is in place. Third,
confidence building measure through gained
experience in conversion technology.
Another
project is the PNOC-EC and MAN of Germany
cooperation project entitled "Demonstration
of CNG Bus from MAN of Germany", where an
Original Engine Manufactured CNG bus will be made
available for demonstration to generate public
awareness on the NGV technology and its
environmental benefits.
 There
are other proposals lined up for natural gas use in
transport that are still in its conceptualization
stage. These are, the conversion of the shuttle
services of NEA and NPC, and the conversion
of government vehicles to CNG. The conversion
of several public utility jeepneys is also being
considered.
