 With
a vision of implementing Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV)
Programs in Asian countries, the ASEAN-New Zealand
Economic Cooperation Program has extended financial
and technical assistance to member countries to
undertake a study on natural gas use for transport.
The
project took off in 1994 as a collaborative endeavor
among local and lead energy agencies to look into
the potential of natural gas as an alternative fuel
to diesel in the transport sector.

Benefits
of the Study
-
Reduction
of vehicular emissions
-
Reduction
of high health risk among commuting public
-
Development
of an alternative fuel to diesel in the
transport sector
-
Fostering
of international cooperation
Natural
gas' potential to reduce the country's dependence on
imported oil and its characteristic as a clean
burning fuel are incentives for government to embark
on gas market expansion such that by the turn of the
decade, natural gas will form a significant
component in the energy mix.
As part
of this study, a diesel-fuelled Isuzu Hi-Lander was
converted to natural gas fuelling. The NGV has been
road-tested covering a 15,000 kilometer distance and
yielded encouraging test
results.
