With a vision of implementing Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) Programs in Asian countries, the ASEAN-New Zealand Economic Cooperation Program has extended financial and technical assistance to member countries to undertake a study on natural gas use for transport.

The project took off in 1994 as a collaborative endeavor among local and lead energy agencies to look into the potential of natural gas as an alternative fuel to diesel in the transport sector.

Project Implementors

Implementing Agency

:

Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Utilization Management Bureau Conventional Energy Division

Co-implementing Agency

:

Philippine National Oil Company - Energy Development Corporation Energy Research and Development Center (PNOC-EDC-ERDC)

Cooperating Agency

:

Philippine National Oil Company- Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC)

Coordinating Agency

:

Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development (DOST-PCIERD)

Funding Agency

:

ASEAN-New Zealand DOST-PCIERD

Benefits of the Study

  1. Reduction of vehicular emissions

  2. Reduction of high health risk among commuting public

  3. Development of an alternative fuel to diesel in the transport sector

  4. Fostering of international cooperation

Natural gas' potential to reduce the country's dependence on imported oil and its characteristic as a clean burning fuel are incentives for government to embark on gas market expansion such that by the turn of the decade, natural gas will form a significant component in the energy mix.

As part of this study, a diesel-fuelled Isuzu Hi-Lander was converted to natural gas fuelling. The NGV has been road-tested covering a 15,000 kilometer distance and yielded encouraging test results.
