Neither Time Nor Distance--Chapter Eight

Chapter Eight

"Sarah!" Jim said, as he scurried up to her in the hallway of the recording building.

She looked back. She had been through too much and he was the last person she wanted to talk to.

"Sarah, how fast could you prepare for a performance?"

"It depends."

"Can you do two songs?"

"When?"

"Fifteen minutes."

She looked at him like he was crazy. In tour rehearsals, they spent days learning their show.

"They should be slow songs, so no dancing." Jim informed her. That took some of the pressure off. No dancing was defnintly good. She agreed and went to find her backup.

Fifteen minutes later Sarah was on stage behind a curtain. The curtain slowly slid open, dragging long red satin velvet across the floor.

A pair of blue-green eyes immediatley glued themselves to her.

The music started and Sarah started singing. While she was doing so she realized who it was that was staring at her. It was Obi-Wan. She began to sing her words more passionately than ever.

This is no ordinary love
And I can never have enough
Of all the things youve given to me
Youre my heart, my soul, my everything

Soon the first song was over. Her audience generously applauded her, and Obi-Wan's gaze still remained fixed on her. The music started again and she opened her mouth to sing. Her voice sounded like angels, every pitch was perfect and her tone clear, with the exception of an ocasional sniffel.

Remember when
We never needed each other
The best of friends
Like sister and brother
We understood
Wed never be
Alone

By now, her face was running with tears. She couldn't bear to loose him. It was hard enough before, and now, she had to let go of the only person who could ever make her happy.

I hear your voice
And I start to tremble
Brings back the child
That I resemble

Thoughts were racing across her mind. She recalled the first time she had ever met Obi-Wan, how he took her breath away. She remembered their first kiss, their argument, how hurt she was, and how great she felt when they met again. She remembered her baby, her and Obi-Wan's baby, and how much joy he had brought them both.

I wanna say this right
And it has to be tonight
Just need you to know
I dont wanna live this lie
I dont wanna say goodbye
With you I wanna spend the rest of my life

She was almost ready to run of the stage and collapse in his arms. She loved him so much. How could she let him go?

What can I do to make you mine
Falling so hard, so fast this time
Everythings changed, we never knew
How did I fall in love with you

The song was over. Again, the audience applauded graciously. Both she and Obi-Wan were in tears. As the curtain closed, she fell to her knees and cried.

~.~

When Obi-Wan was old and alone on Tatooine many years later, his right hand began to throb and then suddenly went numb. It was then that he knew that he would never see his beloved again. He began humming one of songs she sang that night, which gradually became soft singing:

Of all the things youve given to me
Youre my heart, my soul, my everything
