Neither Time Nor Distance--Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven

A few days passed and Sarah was relieved to be finished touring and back home. Things had been looking up for both Obi-Wan and her.

Obi-Wan had come to Earth as a representative of the Jedi Council to explain about the Jedi and their purpose. He was accompanied by several leaders of the Republic, as well, who were there to ask Earth to become part of the Republic. After the discussions took place, he went home with Sarah, and the two were getting prepared to spend their lives together.

"Obi-Wan, can you hand me that book on your left?" Sarah asked.

He tossed the book lightly to her and giggled as she made an unnecessary spectacle of catching it. She left the room momentarily to make a phone call, and returned, throwing a coat at Obi-Wan.

"Come on." she said.

"Where are we going?"

"Out," she answered playfully. "Its a surprise."

"What about the baby?"

"I've already taken care of that. Jennifer is coming to take care of him. Now get ready!" she smiled.

Not long after that, Jennifer was at the door and the two lovebirds had left.

"Now can you tell me where we are going?" Obi-Wan begged.

"Nope." Sarah turned the car into a parking lot in front of a small Italian restaraunt. "Come on." she said, jumping out of the car after she had parked.

It was actually very romantic inside. The room was dimly lit with candles and small lamps, and was well decorated with green plants and extravagant flowers.

The two spent their evening talking over dinner, and took the floor to dance. For hours they were there, dancing closely and whispering sweet nothings into eachother's ears.

After they had finished their dinner and romance, the two got back into their car and headed home, only to find utter disaster.

"Oh my God!" Sarah screamed, suddenly stopping the car and jumping out.

The building was ablaze, and she saw neither hide nor hair of Jennifer or her baby. Obi-Wan was close at Sarah's heels, when a fireman jumped into their path.

"Ma'am, you can't go in there." he said.

"Why not?" she snapped. She wanted to find her child, and her best friend.

No sooner had she spoken, the building collapsed. Sarah looked on in amazement. Neither she or Obi-Wan could move. Then she flew off her hinges, racing towards the burning pile that was her home.

The fireman was close behind her, and pulled her back from the fire kicking and screaming. She looked at him and asked him if Jennifer and the baby had made it out, only to see dissapointed, sympathetic eyes. It was then that she fell to her knees and cried.

She and Obi-Wan spent the night giving police report after police report, neither of them could think straight, and both of them devastated.

For the next few days, the couple stayed with Sarah's cousin, who soon found out she would be housing her entire family due to the tragedy.

After the dual funeral, Sarah stood in the kitchen, heartbroken yet again, when Obi-Wan informed her that he was leaving.

"You can't go, I need you." she pleaded.

"I don't have a choice, Sarah." He looked almost as devastated as she did. "I don't want to go, I'd rather stay with you, but I don't have that choice."

"Then you'll hurry back? You can't be gone too long, Obi-Wan, I need you here." she cried, with tears dripping down her face.

Obi-Wan looked at his beautiful Sarah. Her blonde hair shone like the sun and blue eyes sparkled like diamonds. How could he tell her?

"Right?" she begged to hear him confirm her question. "Right, Obi-Wan?"

"Sarah..." he hesitated, "you know I love you," he put his arms around her and pulled her close, as a single tear rolled down his cheek. "I...I'm not sure I'm coming back."

She backed away. "What do you mean you're not sure if your coming back?" she said, crying harder. "You have to come back."

He pulled her to him again, but didn't speak a word. The two stood their in their sobbing embrace, dreading the days that would come, when neither of them would have eachother again.

Sarah pushed herself away again and reached behind her to the knives on the counter. She grabbed one and looked at Obi-Wan. He looked back confused. Then Sarah took the knife and sliced the palm of her right hand.

"What did you do that for?" Obi-Wan asked, as he reached into a drawer to find a towel to stop the bleeding.

"You do it to, Obi-Wan."

Puzzled, he stared back at her, but she was serious in what she said. Since she was distraught and holding a knife, he decided not to argue. He took the knife and cut his right hand.

She took his hand in hers, squeezing it tightly as their blood mixed and dripped down their arms.

"Now we will always be part of eachother." she said.

They stood there moments longer, staring into eachothers eyes and holding their hands together tightly. They moved closer and kissed what was to be their final kiss.

Obi-Wan left shortly after that, he was to be briefed on his new mission and was leaving after a short 'going-away-party.'
