"I Know It's The Grind, But I'm Sure We Can Find, A Way To Have Fun While We Get This Job Done..."
This section of the site is based on Walt Disney's work ethic. The idea of Walt's work ethic can be seen throughout many of his earlier films. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is Walt's first fully animated feature that showcases his work ethic.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs show seven little men who work in a mine. They don't mind working there. They do not do the work to get paid, they do their work because it is their job. Although they may not like it, it is their place to do this job and so they do it. It is the outcome they are working for and they make joy out of their situation until that outcome is complete. They sing and whistle while they work to make their job better.
According to the documentary Walt; The Man Behind The Myth Walt's work ethic was the same. He didn't see his work as work, but rather the steps to an outcome. He believed people should try and enjoy their job and he thought that everyone who worked together should aim for the same outcome. That is why it came to him as a shock when his employees went on strike.
Singing while you work is one of the main messages presented in High School Musical 2's song "Work This Out". This song portrays almost everything Walt worked for. Are these Walt's ideas being preached to a newer generation through a catchy upbeat tune?
Singing While You Work!
A couple of things "Work This Out" tries to put across that Walt himself believed...
First, Troy gets a summer job at Lava Springs country club. He does not know that Sharpay had something to do with it.
Upon recieving the job, Troy tries to get jobs for his Wildcats team mates so he can spend the summer with his closest friends. He succeeds thinking that the summer is going to be good times under the sun. That is until he gets there. When he finds out his job is "the grind" his team mates soon come down had on him.
Chad sings "How did we get from the top of the world to the bottom of the heap", Taylor joins in singing "I don't recall you mentioning the boss was such a creep". Zeke, trying to keep the team from arguing, sings "We still have the ingredients to make this summer sweet." recieving a dirty look from Chad and the Martha has her say with "I got rags instead of riches" and then Jason joins with "And all these dirty dishes" then all the cast joins saying "just wish I had three wishes."
In what the biography would consider true Walt style, Troy jumps in saying "C'mon, we can totally turn this thing around, we gotta work, work to work this out, we'll make things right, the sun will shine, if we work, work there'll be no doubt, we can still save the summer, if we work this out." This shows that Troy is singing while he works, just like the dwarfs he is finding the best in his work even if it's the grind. He is whistling while he works. The song soon turns back to the complaining workers (maybe representative of the Disney Company's strike?). This time Troy jumps in singing "We're a champion team, a well oiled machine and we've faced tougher problems than this. I know it's the grind but I'm sure we can find, a way to have fun while we get this job done." Once again, Troy shows signs of Walt's work ethic. He wants to have fun with his work, he wants to get to the outcome and get the job done. He wants to work together as a team, like Walt's idea of co-workers working together to achieve one common goal,  and have fun while doing it.
Walt Disney and Troy Bolton
So, can Walt Disney be seen through Troy Bolton? According to his Biography released by his own company, his work ethic matches almost identical to Troy's. Is this a bad thing to be teaching kids? See my views on this topic under "What I've Been Looking For (Reprise)".
