~Gotta Go My Own Way~
Gotta Go My Own Way
clip from
Disney Channel's
High School Musical 2
"I Gotta Do What's Best For Me..."
In the first High School Musical, it is no shock that Gabriella can be seen as a mixture of many different Disney Princesses while Sharpay can be seen as a mixture of many different Disney villians.
Gabriella, in the first movie, shows many traits that belong to Belle from "Beauty and the Beast". She is a book worm, she is smart and intelligent. She is not like most DIsney Princess, she can think for herself. However, she shows traits of other Disney Princesses. She is shy, like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. In the first movie she needs her "Prince" to rescue her. When she gets out on stage to sing for her call-backs and the whole basketball/scholastic teams are watching her she freezes up. She needs Troy's pep talk to convince her that she can do what she set out to do. Through Troy, she is able to sing.
Gabriella!
Sharpay!
Sharpay can be seen as a modern Malificent (from Sleeping Beauty). She is evil and she wants revenge on Gabriella for getting a call-back. Like the evil Hag in Snow White, she don't give a posion apple, but she do switch the call-backs to hinder Gabriella's chances of being the fairest on the stage. Also, like Cruella DeVille (from 101 Dalmatians) Sharpay has her evil henchman, Ryan, who does all of her dirty work for her until he is no longer of any use to her, then (in HSM 2) she gets rid of him and does her dirty work herself.
Disney's views in HSM hasn't changed much when it comes to portraying a good girl and an the villianous lady. However, Disney didn't expect HSM to be the hit it was. When HSM 2 was released, Disney took a different spin on things. Disney gave Gabriella her own song where she gets angry with the way Troy is treating her. She realizes that she has to make up her own mind and she leaves him. She is now thinking for herself and doing things by herself. She don't need someone to help her through the lyrics this time. She don't need Troy to say "just like kindergarten" to bring the lyrics of "Breaking Free" back into her mind. This time she starts of singing "I Gotta Say What's On My Mind..."
Is the Disney Channel trying to make a statement here? Did they only decide to try and work something like this in after they realized how big of a hit HSM became? This is unsure but we can see that HSM 2 is giving females a stronger voice. They give Taylor and Kelsi singing parts (which never happened in the first movie) and Gabriella is the one doing all the thinking. She is the one who encourages Ryan to step out of his sisters shadow, she is the one who gives the pep talk to the employees about working together, she is even a lifegaurd, which requires saving people's lives.
