"She Wants Fabulous, That Is Her Simple Request, All Things Fabulous, Bigger and Better and Best..."
Most of the Religions around the world have doctrines that preach against greed, and fortune. The Bible speaks of it being easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than a rich man entering the gates of Heaven. Buddhism and Hinduism believe that greed and fortune and worldly desires lead to suffering and therefore we are stuck in this cycle until we give these things up and find a deeper meaning.
High School Musical is not much different from these world Religions in its teachings.
Sharpay and Ryan are the rich kids in school. They basically run the theatre club and they plan on taking their acts worldwide, their biggest goal in life is a Tony Award. Sharpay and Ryan are also greedy kids who will do anything to get what they want. They are spoiled and try to rain on the parade of anyone or anything that comes in their way.
In High School Musical we are introduced to Ryan and Sharpay as the siblings who starred in all of East High's musical production. When they have auditions for the school musical it is obvious that Sharpay and Ryan have the parts secure. The thing is, not only are they mean to the other auditioners they are also mean to Kelsi, taking the songs she wrote for the musical and making them their own by rearranging the the music. After the audition process they know they've got the parts and leave the theatre with their heads held high.
Ryan and Sharpay
At this point Gabriella enters the theatre and tells Ms. Darbus that she wants to audition. Ms. Darbus tells her she's too late and the theatre waits for no one. Plus,Gabriella does not have a partner. This is when Troy enters the theatre and says he will sing with her. Ms. Darbus sticks to saying no because auditions are over and they were late.
Ms. Darbus proceeds to exit the theatre. When Kelsi goes to leave the piano bench she trips over the leg and her papers scatter everywhere. Troy runs up to help her up and help her gather her sheet music. Kelsi then plays Troy and Gabriella the song the way she intended for it to be and Troy and Gabriella sing it. Mrs. Darbus re-enters the theatre, lsitening all along, and tells them they have call-backs.
When Ryan and Sharpay find out about this they hatch a plan to make sure no one gets the lead roles except them. They persuade Ms. Darbus to change the call-back times so that the call-backs, the basketball game and the scholastics decathlon are all at the same time, that way Troy and Gabriella cannot audition again. The problem with this scene is that Troy and Gabriella have friends who help them out. Half way through the basketball game the lights go out and a science experiment goes wrong at the scholastics challenge, this leads to everyone going to the theatre to watch Troy and Gabriella audition. In the end, the greed and selfishness and lust for fame that Ryan and Sharpay had back-fired. Even though they thought they had sure fire plans, it didn't work for them. In the Western idea of Karma, what went around came around and Troy and Gabriella got the lead roles with Ryan and Sharpay as understudies.
Sharpay Evans!
In the second movie Ryan has a change for the better and tries to help out his Wildcat friends. Sharpay, on the other hand, is still the greedy, fame thirsty, rich kid she was in the first movie. Her plan in this movie is to steal Troy from Garbiella and make the Wildcat's lives hell. She wants her and Troy to performe at the talent show and ditches her brother (who she's been in the talent show with every year prior) and asks Troy to sing with her. Ryan, now angry with his sister, tries to get back at her by getting the Wildcats to rehearse a show that he's going to direct, to show his sister he can make it on his own. When Sharpay hears this, she gets the hotel manager to make a new rule, employees have to cater at the talent show, they cannot be in it. This way she has a sure shot of winning the trophy with Troy and maybe even winning Troy in the end.
She gets so blinded by what she wants that she starts using her money to buy Troy fancy things and she keeps giving him promotions and she even uses her father's connections to get him to met a basketball team. All this time Troy is thinking about his future and spending more time with Sharpay in hopes of getting his name heard by the basketball team or being able to win scholarships to some college that he stops spending much time with Gabriella. This is Sharpay's dream come true, Troy is all hers.
Once again, High School Musical 2, like the first one, shows us that money and fame cannot get you happiness. Sharpay, in the end, loses her chances of performing at the talent show, loses her chances with Troy, and is left alone in her dressing room to think about the mean things she's done over the summer to the people who tried to be nice to her. Once again, the Western idea of Karma, what goes around comes around, is shown again in this movie.
