~Stick To The Status Quo~
Stick To The Status Quo
clip from
Disney Channel's
High School Musical
"If You Wanna Be Cool Follow One Simple Rule..."
One of the things that made the first High School Musical so popular among pre-teens is its idea of peer pressure. Most Junior High to High School kids go through those years where everyone fits into a social group. High School musical showcases this. The popular kids are the theatre and drama club who eat up stairs in the cafeteria. They have rivals though, because the jocks (the basketball team) is very close to their standing. Then they have other groups that are lower on the scale. There are the brainiacs, the skaters, the scholastics club and others that we aren't introduced to.
In this type of setting, as in most schools, kids tend to stick with their friends, and the people and things they know. This is the idea that the song "Stick To The Status Quo" evolved out of. When Troy met Gabriella, however, he didn't realize that they would get caught up with the drama club. Troy was in the basketball group but when he got a call-back for the High School Musical, this made people feel different things. Chad, Troy's best friend, thought he was losing his mind to upset the Status Quo, asking him if he ever thought any of the basketball greats ever tried out for their High School Musicals. When others found out it caused a stir. Disney presented these "coming outs" in a song. The song starts like any normal day in the Cafeteria, but Zeke has something to say. He starts singing about his baking obsession. This leads his team mates to say "not another word" and then go into a song about how to be cool you need to follow the status quo rule.
Zeke!
Soon the cafeteria is in an uproar, everyone is telling their secrets. Martha Cox, one of the brainiacs, decides to tell her friends that sometimes she enjoys hip hop dancing more than she do her homework. This leads to the brainiacs singing the same tune about following the status quo and telling her if she wants to be cool she has to read books like the rest of the brainiacs. This then goes to the skaters. One Skater dude admits that he plays the Cello, which leads to the other skaters asking what it is. When he explains that he has to wear a coat and tie the other skaters go into the same song and dance routine.
Martha!
Everyone in the cafeteria is soon mingling together. No one is sticking with their original groups and everyone is realizing they all have something in common. All except the drama club that is. They are the cool group who sits up stairs and over looks the whole cafeteria. Sharpay soon sees the stir that's being caused because of Troy and Gabriella's call-backs and she is not liking it. She starts singing that this is not how she planned things to happen and yells at everyone to be quiet. This makes the students realize what's going on and they go back into their song about sticking to their groups. Although they all go back to their groups, it is through this song that they realize they may have something in common with others and that not everything is black and white. It is not until, however, the basketball and scholastics teams realize how much the musical means to Troy and Gabriella that they realize that people are more than the crowd they hang with. This leads to supporting Troy and Gabriella in their call-backs and going on to winning the basketball game and the scholastics decathlon.
It is this idea of acceptance that draws teens to High School Musical. It shows that not everyone is the same and you can be different and have different friends and enjoy different hobbies. It shows kids to explore their lives and find numerous things they like. It also shows that everyone can get along if they try, it's because of this status quo that we don't.
Like Jesus, befriending the tax collectors and prostitutes, this movie shows people of different backgrounds coming together for a better cause and forgetting about peer pressure.
