What I've Been Looking For
clip from
Disney Channel's
High School Musical
"For So Long I Was Lost, So Good To Be Found..."
"The fan base for High School Musical has become cult. If you are not already converted to the Church of East High, you may underestimate the appeal of this movie among the tween set." (DVD Verdict Review) This DVD review sums up exactly what this section of the site sets out to talk about.
High School Musical Encore Edition!
When "High School Musical" first premiered on The Disney Channel it became Disney's highest rated made for TV movie with 7.7 million viewers (only to be beat later by The Cheetah Girls 2). The Soundtrack was soon released and it hit the heights, scoring high ranks on the Billboard Top 100 Charts. This lead to Disney quickly releasing the movie to DVD in an encore edition.
High School Musical Remix!
The success of the first release lead to a re-release of the first movie. This time the release was called "High School Musical Remix". The marketing scheme behind this was to give a few extra features, but not too many, maybe in case they wanted to release a third? Disney added a few remix songs to this release, along with the dance-along and a few behind the scenes interviews, but not much more than the first release already had.
With the success of the first movie and the sales of the DVD releases, Disney only saw it fit to give this movie a sequel. The movie was never expected to be as big as it was. The release of High School Musical 2 drew in 17.6 million viewers. This was the highest rated original movie to ever appear on the Disney Channel. It had a higher rating than Monday Night Football.
The high ratings and intense fan following, there is no wonder this movie is called a "tween cult".A blog site called "Religion In American History" actually lists "Disney Religion" and quotes Mark Pinsky (author of The Gospel According To Disney) all over the place. This site focuses on High School Musical and talks about the values that can be learned through the messages that the songs give. Another site compares HSM to Christianity, saying like Christianity growing out of Judaism, The religion of High School Musical grew out of the religion of Grease (New York Times).
But what draws kids into these movies? The main viewers of these movies are pre-teens who haven't reached High School yet. These movies give them hope for the future, a hope for a fantasy life, like most Disney movies give. Also, like Religions, it gives them something to look forward to, not knowing if this is what it's going to be like or not. In High School will everyone get along? Will there be song and dance numbers (this one is a little corny)? Will everyone "be in this together" or will they "stick to the status quo"? It leaves many questions on answered but it gives them hope into what to expect.
Also, like most Religion around the world, High School Musical teaches moral values, bad things come to the wicked and good things to those who do good. If we ask for forgiveness we will get it but in order to be a good person after we are forgiven, we have to work at it. It teaches us that everyone should be accept for who they are and everyone should work together for one goal, a better way of living. High School Musical basically gives tweens a set of doctrines that they can follow.
The author of the blog above states that he is a parent and he's read all the critcisms against Disney, his response to the Disney Religion (and High School Musical) is that he would rather his daughter get the message of everyone working together than to watch most of the stuff that is on television today.
