High School Musical 2
"Once In A Lifetime Means There's No Second Chance..."
Redemption is a main theme that runs throughout the High School Musical series. Not only are the Twins Ryan and Sharpay redeemed at the end of the first movie, the good guy in the movie, Troy Bolton, needs to be redeemed as well. The second movie, however, is a bit different. Ryan Evans tries to stick to his new life style and slowly progresses to a better person. Troy and Sharpay end up falling again and need to be redeemed again.
Ryan is one character in High School Musical that needs to be redeemed. He follows in his sisters foot steps and in the first movie he helps her in rigging the theatre call-backs. They both want to be stars and will do anything for it, so when they find out their positions in the school musical may be taken by Troy and Gabriella, he helps his sister rig the call-backs so that the call-backs are the same time as Troy's basketball game and Gabriella's scholastics decathlon. This way both him and his sister are the only ones able to show up for couples call-backs and this way they get the parts. When the basketball team and decathlon team realize how much these call-backs mean to their friends. They band together to try and help Troy and Gabriella out. They rig the lighting in the gym and set up one of the sciene projects to go bad and this way when it's Troy and Gabriella's turn for call-backs, the science project stinks them out of the decathlon and the lights go off, causing the team to have to leave the gym.
Ryan Evans!
In the end of the first movie, Troy and Gabriella get cast after call-backs and Ryan tells them that they'll do great. This apology is what redeems him. He becomes a better person from here on. In the second movie he tries to live up to this apology and even goes as far as stepping out of his sister's shadow and trying to make a musical with the Wildcats so they can enter the talent show at Lava Springs country club. He soon becomes close friends with the Wildcats.
Sharpay Evans!
Sharpay is quite different from her brother. She is the leader of the call-back switch in the first movie that almost caused Troy and Gabriella to miss their chance. After Gabriella gets the lead role Sharpay meets her in the gym and tells her that she is the under study so break a leg. After Gabriella's shocked look Sharpay giggles and says "in theatre that means good luck!" This little exchange at the end makes the audience see a different side of the rampant Sharpay they watched throughout the movie. It gives her a softer side and you feel as if she is trying to redeem herself. But did it last?
In the second movie Sharpay is once again up to her old ways, except this time she has her eyes on a different prize. This time around she is fighting with Gabriella for the affection of Troy Bolton. Gabriella has the personality that Troy is going for bu Sharpay has the money, and she uses it. Sharpay wants Troy to sng with her in the talent show and not Gabriella. She starts making rules like "employees are not allowed to participate in the talent show." This keeps Troy from singing with Gabriella but then Sharpay goes further. She sets up dates for him to meet her parents and for them to talk about scholarships and then she gets him to meet basketball teams. She uses her money to try and win him over. In the end Troy goes with Gabriella. When Sharpay realizes that it was their love all along, and not money, she realizes what she did wrong. She then goes to recieve the talent award, and for a second time she tries to redeem herself by giving the award to her brother, because he was the one who directed the show all along. We then see them at the end of the movie all hanging out by the pool and singing "All For One". Will Sharpay go back to her old ways in the third movie? Will the third time be the charm? This will have to wait until October to be known.
Troy is a third character who needs forgiveness, not just in one, but in two of the movies. In the first movie Troy is the jock. He ends up auditioning for a musical with Gabriella and seems to be putting that before his basketball team. When quizzed by his basketball team he tells them that basketball is more important than any girl. This, all the while, is being heard by Gabriella over a webcam. She then goes into her "When There Was Me and You" song saying how love was too good to be true. Troy don't find out until later that she knows what he said. He, at first, don't know how he's going to make it up to her. Finally, in desperation, he goes to her balcony and sings her "Start of Something New", the song they sang to each other when they first met at the New Year's party.
Troy Bolton!
Gabriella finds it in her heart to forgive Troy and in the end they get the lead roles in the musical together. The second movie is basically the same. Troy puts his basketball and his future before the girl he loves, his friends and the plans he has for that summer. He lets Sharpay's money and connections get in his way and this leads him to be outcasted by his friends. In the end he realizes what he did wrong and goes into singing his song "Bet On It" talking about how he's going to get back what he lost. He then ditches Sharpay and her money/connections and seeks the help of Ryan, who is now friends with the Wildcats. This leads him to learning a new song and trying out for the talent show where him and Gabriella meet up on stage again. His first lines in the song "Everyday" say "Once in a lifetime, means there's no second chance, but I believe that you and me should grab it while we can." This is his apology, asking for a second chance (which is really his third) and once again, she forgives him and they have a happy ending, or do they? That's going to have to wait until October when High School Musical 3: Senior Year is released in Theatres!
