"I Finally Found, What I've Been Looking For..."
What intially drew me to this movie was the fact that the first movie revolved soley around theatre. I am a Theatre student at Memorial University and although I don't sing, I am fascinated by musicals. I am also a big fan of Disney so when I heard about this movie I had to see it. My first watch through I kept wanting to associate with the characters of Ryan and Sharpay, them both being the theatrical people, but I got the sense of the good vs. evil aspect and Sharpay and Ryan were the evil side. In the end however, we see that Ryan and Sharpay are forgiven for their ways and this made me feel good. It gives people the message that no matter how rotten someone is, they can still be forgiven.
Also, the idea of "We're All In This Together" is one that stuck with me. Anything you do in life you will at some point depend on another person. No matter what you will have to depend on a doctor, councellor, store owner, mailman... somewhere along the way everyone depends on someone. Just the message of being in this together for the better of everyone is a message that stuck. especially one with a theatre student like me. I realize that everyone in a production plays a part. This is why it makes me angry when actors think they're the stars. If it wasn't for the lighting operator where would the actor be? on a dark stage, invisible to the audience. If it wasn't for the Stage Manager who would call cues for the actor to be on stage? All these things intrigued me about this movie, but the thing that inspired me most was the Stick To The Status Quo section.
Growing up in small town Newfoundland I was never an outgoing person. I was labelled the shy guy through school, from grade one to twelve. When I was looking into Universities to attend I went to my guidance councellor to ask about acting schools The advice he gave me was "You're the shiest person in the school, do you really think you'll succeed in theatre? Now, if you would like to know about English degrees..." This was a bit discouraging so I settled on the English degree, until I found out that Memorial offered a Diploma in Performance and Communications Media, which dealt with theatre and film. I auditioned and got in. This just shows that sticking people into certain groups without actually knowing what they're capable of isn't fair to that person. I was shy but I enjoyed theatre, Zeke was a jock but he could bake, Martha was smart but she liked dancing. Don't give up on your dreams because of the status quo you fit into.
It is good to see a movie where people work together for a common goal, a good goal, and rich and poor can attend the same school, along with African Americans and Asians, etc. It's also good to see a girl who can think for herself and that no matter how rotten you are, you can be forgiven and given a second chance. These are all the doctrines that give HSM that religious deminsion.
Now on to other things... Why is Humuhumunukunukuapua'a an important part of this movie? Well it just shows that Disney did its research into female art forms in Japan. To know about the colors and the dances, it shows that Disney is no longer sticking to American traditions but extending its boundaries (with that said, people claim Disney is trying to take over the world, click here to see why I think it's possible they may be trying, and if they are who cares? Everyone will be part of a whole new small world where blue birds pitch on your shoulder and everyone can go the distance while wondering what else might be in store just around the river bend!)
The topic of homosexuality is the last topic for my to cover my opinion on. Do I think Ryan is homosexual? Absolutly not. Ryan Evans is a character and if he's not written into a script as gay, then he is not gay. He is a character and therefore he don't think or feel, it is Lucas Grabeel that gives him life, Ryan is not a person. Is Disney trying to make us see him as gay? Nope. We see what we want to see and if people read these things into Ryan then it is what they want to see him as. I see Ryan as someone who is overly in love with everything theatre. He wants to be a star and therefore he is transfixed on his appearance (who knows when an agent might be looking).  His mannerisms come from his exaggerating theatrical performances. Why do he get excited about Ashton? Simple, Punk'd is about celebrity pranks. Someone so obssesed with stardom as Ryan would obviously get excited if he thinks he is reaching the ranks of being a celebrity, especially someone that would be caught on Prank'd
So, these are my views on HSM and why I have become a huge fan of the movie. I hope you all enjoyed reading an I hope I helped you see that sometimes there is a little something more to fandom than meets the eye. Until my next Religion and pop culture class, hope you enjoyed this.
