Financing, Insurance, Real estate and Business Industry in Hong Kong in June, 1999.

Hong Kong has always been a well-known financial and business centre in the world. Its lack of natural resources, deep harbour and favourable position has contributed to the development of Hong Kong as an entreport, where further development turned HK into a financial centre in Asia and in the world. The financial and business sector is an important one in employment in HK. We can see the distribution of the people employed in different districts in the following map and the total number from the following table:

Table 1. Number of People Employed in the Industry of Finance, insurance, real estate and business in different districts

We can also see from the following bar chart for a clearer picture of how people employed in the manufacturing industry are distributed in different districts within Hong Kong :

Chart 1 : Distribution of Labour in finance, insurance, real estate and business in Hong Kong

We can see from the bar chart that Kowloon City has stand out for the number of people being employed in the sector of finance, insurance, real estate and business, with an exact number of 68,217 (see Table1). The ones that are second of Kowloon City are Wanchai, Central and Western, with figures above 3000. The Island district was the one with least people engaged in the sector. It is probably the high density of Kowloon City, and the well established financial center of Wanchai, Central and Western, that accounts for the large number of people employed in the sector.
