Pink Rings: I never heard why they selected pink as the theme colour for The Big Rings ‘round town — there was another giant set at the top of Martin Place (a major gathering place in the centre of town). Perhaps it was a friendly colour to go with the hoped-for informal, happy mood. Some of them are still around in limbo, hanging out in metal recycling yards awaiting someone with an affordable good idea for them. Again, this frame is part of a panorama, selected for Chris’ presence. Behind the picnic shelter you can see one of the ‘toxic mountains’ piled up, covered with clay sealer & clean fill, then turfed. For that fortnight it was also planted with a pattern of fluttering tiny cheerful flags in blue & white, a theme repeated in the water-ripple pattern seen on banners, tickets &, here, on the distant fence marking off the pedestrian route close to the main site. The Stadium didn’t align well with the rings, alas, so it’s not in this image.
