Malcolm's job with AstraZeneca

Malcolm is a Chemistry Research Fellow working at AstraZeneca R&D Griffith University (AZGU). He is part of a Natural Product Drug Discovery Project. There is a high throughput screening laboratory where extracts are tested for biological activity against target enzymes or receptors. The compound that causes the activity in active extracts is isolated and its molecular structure determined. You can visit AstraZeneca R&D Griffith University web site for more info.

In layman's terms: Malcolm works as part of teams to discover drugs from natural products e.g. mushrooms and other fungi from forests or sponges from underwater reefs etc. Malcolm is one of those people wearing white lab coats and goggles and work with all those tubes with colorful stuff in them. They have expensive high-tech equipment that do tests on all those colorful stuff and come up with graphs. Malcolm's job is then to interpret the graphs and to come up with the chemical structures of the active compounds.

Malcolm cycles to and from work every day.

He has a research assistant, Annette, and supervises Alice, a Chinese lady, doing her PhD. AZGU gives a course at the university on Drug Design. Malcolm takes two lectures in this course. He has also visited AZ sites in Sweden and England last year and talked at a conference in Bangladesh.
