Orienteering
In 1979 Finland released one special stamp
on the VIII World Orientation Championships. Orienteering is an interesting sport which is
becoming more popular every year. The first international match was held in 1932 when the
Swedish and Norwegian teams met. Soon national championships in orienteering were being
held in Scandinavia, Switzerland and Hungary. An International Orienteering Federation was
formed at the 1961 Congress in Copenhagen under its fold. To be a true master of the sport
one must not only be a first-rate runner but also be able to precisely determine one's
location, and have a good eye. They also have to overcome numerous obstacles and report at
control posts. The Orienteering World Championships in August 2001 is celebrated with a
special stamp, issued on 16 May 2001. The designer, Ken Nikander, was inspired by the form
of a compass in his work.
