World Heritage Sites
In 1995, Japan issued this stamp on
World Heritage Sites No.2. In the Horyuji area stand many wooden buildings that were
constructed in the Asuka period (592-710) and thus are the
oldest in the world. Among them, the Horyuji Temple is said to have been built by the
order of Prince Shotoku in the early seventh century. The Horyuji area is divided into the
Western and Easter precincts. The Western Prescient centers on the Buddhist temple with
its ambient corridors. The Kondo mail hall and the five-storied pagoda are situated east
and west. The chapel is highly appreciated as an edifice of the Nara Period (710-794).
Within the precinct are about 2,300 treasures of overseas origin. Some 190 of the
precincts treasures and structures are designated as National Treasurers of
Important Cultural Properties. |
