World's first Sports Stamp
The practice of issuing postage
stamps to help cover the Olympic expenses dates back to the first Olympiad in Athens in
1896. This tradition is still going on. Today, it is an accepted norm that "every
stamp sold will benefit the Olympic Games and the Olympic team of the country where the
stamps are sold."
Greece was the first country to introduce sports stamps. In 1896 Greece issued a series of
12 stamps to mark the first modern Olympic Games. The stamps show, among other sports,
chariot-racing, discus-throwing and wrestling, which were very popular at that time. |
