Doc lived on Social Security...(which is not enough to live on, much less RACE on) so everything racing, had to be sponsored. Many, many people helped him, throughout his career; some for the advertising, some for the (little) money we could afford, and some just for the "good feeling" they got by being able to help him. We solicited local businesses for the weekly Gate Fees, and they received the limited advertising of: 1) Pit Board display, 2) Announcement by Race Track Announcer, 3) Inclusion in our "Albums", and 4) end of the year Thank-you in Newspapers. We solicited for needed parts, fuel, tires, and work on the car. Because, as I was to learn, "A race car is never done." The driver always wants to go faster, and parts break or wear out. As one motor sponsor, Jerry Jackson told us, "A race car is like a hand grenade, with the pin pulled." In Doc's case, because of his disability, he needed many adaptations to the car just to be able to get inside of it and drive it. Our very first and most important Sponsor was R&J Mobility in Independence, OR. |
