Outlook
Critics be wary of damaging statements towards second year head coach Buddy Teevans. As Tyrone Willingham wisely departed for Notre Dame, he left an empty cupboard at the farm. In 2002 the Cardinal only had two starters returing on defense, starting QB Chad Lewis was injured heading into fall camp and playmakers Teyo Johnson and Luke Powell did not get enough touches.
Storming Palo Alto
Lewis returns as the wildcard quarterback in the conference. Blessed with receiver Powell and with tight ends Brett Pierce and Alex Smith, the passing yards will accumulate.
Running backs Tolon and Lemon can pass-block, hang onto the football, and mash out positive yards. The duo compliments the savvy arm of Lewis.
The Defense can only ascend after handing foes 34 points a game in 2002. After returning only two starters last year, Teevans gets nine back for this campaign including the whole linebacking corp.
Bleeding Red
Stanford would be a solid WAC team, but a cellar dweller in the loaded Pac-Ten. Suffice to say the schedule is brutal with UW and SC on the road and Notre Dame to cap the season
Teevans has yet to create an identity for the program and fans are wondering where things are headed. It is difficult enough to draw fans in the south bay even with a winning season.
Junior Kwame Harris left the program early for the NFL draft after earning the lineman of the year in the conference. Games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage and the Cardinal lack stardom on the offensive front.
