Preview

Mike Price may regret taking the job at Bama, where winning a national championship is both the expectation and the rule. The requirments in Pullman are bit less stringent and new head coach Bill Doba can ease his system in. With the return of tough running back Jermaine Green and the loss of team leader QB Jason Gesser, the Cougs may gravitate to a ball control offense and help ease the coaching transition and premature loss of defensive star Rien Long.

Cross-State Traditions

As cross-state rival UW is virtual tight end factory, WSU may be catching up in this catergory. True sophomore Troy Bienemann torched the Dawgs in the Apple Cup and with two great receivers heading to the NFL, QB Matt Kegel will need distribute the ball over the middle.

Loose in the Palouse

The talent level on both side of the ball is formidable. WSU boast playmakers and the line strength to back it up.

Doba will emphasize the run as Kegel develops. Lineman Calvin Armstrong and mates can open up holes and the running game should aid in an early season test at Notre Dame.

The top three teams ranked by team speed in the conference are USC, WSU and UW. Wicked pass catcher Devard Darling is not even the fastest player on the team.

Bad Tidings

Sports fans in the Evergreen State are familiar with the term "Couging It" or the Cougs committing an influx of bonehead mistakes with fatal results. Will this be the year?

Can Kegel recover from his branding after a frigid performmance in the Apple Cup?
