Outlook
Head coach Dirk Koetter built a Boise State program to mid-major national promince and his success continues in Tempe. The other surprise in the conference, the Devils earned a Holiday Bowl berth and played a strong game versus Kansas State. Whether or not this will be a reloading or rebuilding year is the key question.
Desert Sunshine
Andrew Walter can throw, but will the running game mature and become a staple of what could be a diverse attack? The talent is there both on the o-line and in the backfield. Mike Williams and Hakim Hill could be a respectable one-two punch while keeping opponents off-balance.
Who will emerge as Walter's clutch wide receiver? The Devils may struggle out of the gate until one of the many athletes on the outside developes into a playmaker.
While the Devils boast a potent passing attack, one of the best kept secrets in college football looms in the backfield. Fullback Mike Carney is a throwback to the glory days of football toughness and at 260 pounds does the little things that help a team win games crucial games in November.
The pass defense can only improve after yielding 244 yards per game last season. Exit monster Terrell Suggs, but overall this unit should be solid.
Koetting Wins
As good as Walter is, who will he throw to on the outside? Wideout Skyler Fulton has been inconsistent and Daryl Lightfoot is quick, but neither is a speed merchant.
ASU plays a defensive scheme which features two linebackers. Two new faces will have to learn the trade and cover the middle of the field.
