In the feel good story of the offseason, Dennis Erickson left for greener pastures and Mike Riley returned as the main man in Corvallis. Riley originally built OSU from obscurity in the mid 1990s and paved the way for prime time central Oregon. Can he maintain the momentum and attitude spawned by Erickson?

Things will be swell...

Derek Anderson must improve his passing percentage and cut down on mistakes in league play. Conference foes held him to an awful 38% connection rate and intercepted 9 passes. The upside is that the 6'6 junior thrived on big plays and threw 25 touchdown passes.

Get the ball into Stephen Jackson's hands! The Heisman candidate runs a 4.3 forty at 230 pounds and loves to punish defenders with his strength and endurance. Plus, he has great hands and knows how to time a screen pass.

The bad boys of the Pac-Ten will garner success. As long as the Beavs and vocal and emotional leader Richard Siegler win the mind games with vintage lockerroom bulletin board promises and few lates hits per ball game, Corvallis will remain a happy place Saturday nights.

Let the bad news roll..

Can a defense which lost a plethora of players to the NFL overcome adversity and the aerial assault of West Coast offensive units? The returning starters in the secondary must mold two young corners into solid performers.

If only WR Jayson Boyd at 6'4 blessed with speed possessed 5'8 Cole Clasen's quickness, hands and heart, well the story has been told too many times in college football. Both Boyd and corner Brandon Browner are athletically gifted, but need to improve their learning curves.

Can Tim Euhus ever become a vital member of the offense? In the spread offense, it is imperative that the tight end hang onto the ball on first down resulting routes over the middle. Last season, Euhus dropped too many passes and the offense could not funciton at an optimal level. Tight end is a concern because Euhus may have tapped the pinnacle of his talent and the reserves have little experience.

The Beavs finish 2003 on the road at SC and in Eugene. How much will Anderson and teammates mature to ensure a strong finish and bid for an upper echelon postseason treat?
