Deuteronomy

1 ¶Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the
way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed
mount Seir many days. 2 And the LORD spake unto me, saying, 3 Ye
have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward. 4
And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the
coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir;
and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves
therefore: 5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their
land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount
Seir unto Esau for a possession. 6 Ye shall buy meat of them for
money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for
money, that ye may drink. 7 For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee
in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this
great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with
thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
8 ¶And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau,
which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and
from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness
of Moab. 9 And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites,
neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of
their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children
of Lot for a possession. 10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past,
a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; 11 Which also
were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them
Emims. 12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children
of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before
them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his
possession, which the LORD gave unto them. 13 Now rise up, said
I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook
Zered. 14 And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until
we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until
all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among
the host, as the LORD sware unto them. 15 For indeed the hand of
the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host,
until they were consumed. 16 So it came to pass, when all the men
of war were consumed and dead from among the people, 17 That the
LORD spake unto me, saying, 18 Thou art to pass over through Ar,
the coast of Moab, this day: 19 And when thou comest nigh over against
the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them:
for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any
possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for
a possession. 20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants
dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD
destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in
their stead: 22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in
Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded
them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day: 23 And the Avims
which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came
forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
24 ¶Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon:
behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of
Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him
in battle. 25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and
the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven,
who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish
because of thee. 26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness
of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way,
I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left. 28 Thou
shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water
for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites
which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan
into the land which the LORD our God giveth us. 30 But Sihon king
of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened
his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver
him into thy hand, as appeareth this day. 31 And the LORD said unto
me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee:
begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land. 32 Then Sihon
came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. 33
And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him,
and his sons, and all his people. 34 And we took all his cities
at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and
the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain: 35 Only
the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the
cities which we took. 36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the
river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto
Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God
delivered all unto us: 37 Only unto the land of the children of
Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor
unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our
God forbad us.

Proverbs
29
|
|
1 ¶He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly
be destroyed, and that without remedy.
2 ¶When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but
when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.
3 ¶Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth
company with harlots spendeth his substance.
4 ¶The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth
gifts overthroweth it.
5 ¶A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.
6 ¶In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the
righteous doth sing and rejoice.
7 ¶The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked
regardeth not to know it.
8 ¶Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away
wrath.
9 ¶If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage
or laugh, there is no rest.
10 ¶The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.
11 ¶A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till
afterwards.
12 ¶If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.
13 ¶The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth
both their eyes.
14 ¶The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall
be established for ever.
15 ¶The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself
bringeth his mother to shame.
16 ¶When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but
the righteous shall see their fall.
17 ¶Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall
give delight unto thy soul.
18 ¶Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth
the law, happy is he.
19 ¶A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand
he will not answer.
20 ¶Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope
of a fool than of him.
21 ¶He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall
have him become his son at the length.
22 ¶An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth
in transgression.
23 ¶A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the
humble in spirit.
24 ¶Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth
cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
25 ¶The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust
in the LORD shall be safe.
26 ¶Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh
from the LORD.
27 ¶An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is
upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

1 ¶Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where
Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2
There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was
one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound
of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of
Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled
with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples,
Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, 5 Why was
not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the
poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because
he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying
hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but
me ye have not always. 9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew
that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that
they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 10
But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also
to death; 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went
away, and believed on Jesus.
12 ¶On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when
they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches
of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed
is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And
Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting
on an ass's colt. 16 These things understood not his disciples at
the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that
these things were written of him, and that they had done these things
unto him. 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called
Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that
he had done this miracle. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among
themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world
is gone after him.
20 ¶And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship
at the feast: 21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of
Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see
Jesus. 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and
Philip tell Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour
is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily,
I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and
die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his
life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man
serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my
servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
27 ¶Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save
me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. 28
Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying,
I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29 The people
therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered:
others said, An angel spake to him. 30 Jesus answered and said,
This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. 31 Now is
the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be
cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw
all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should
die. 34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that
Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must
be lifted up? who is this Son of man? 35 Then Jesus said unto them,
Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the
light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness
knoweth not whither he goeth. 36 While ye have light, believe in
the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake
Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
37 ¶But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they
believed not on him: 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might
be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report?
and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore
they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath
blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not
see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted,
and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw
his glory, and spake of him.
42 ¶Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him;
but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they
should be put out of the synagogue: 43 For they loved the praise
of men more than the praise of God.
44 ¶Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not
on me, but on him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him
that sent me. 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever
believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if any man
hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not
to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He that rejecteth
me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word
that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he
gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever
I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
