When She Was Bad

Willow says that there are no miniature golf courses in Sunnydale. Later on in the series we find out differently!

Music:

Allison Krauss & Union Station 'It Doesnt Matter',Chris Beck'Resurrection', Sledgehammer and 'Training Montage'.
The band onstage at the Bronze when Buffy does her teasy dance with Xander are Cibo Matto, who play their tracks 'Spoon' and
'Sugar Water'.

Some Assembly Required

This is the first episode of Buffy to feature Tony Head's voice on the opening teaser, rather than a generic network voice.

With mention of Fondren High, we learn that Sunnydale actually has two high schools.

School Hard

According to the sign Spike passes on the way into Sunnydale, the town's population is 38,500.

It turns out that there is a rival to the Bronze in Sunnydale - the "Fish Tank" bar. Juvenile delinquent Sheila drinks there!

Giles says Spike is "barely two hundred", according to his books. Later episodes make it clear that Spike is actually just nudging 120 at this time.

"You were my sire, man!" Spike shouts at Angel. Oddly, it later turns out that actually Angelus sired Drusilla, who then sired Spike. So that would make Angel Spike's grand-sire, surely? To clear up the confusion, Joss Whedon has gone on record to say that both come to the same thing, and he always intended that Drusilla be Spike's sire.

Music:

Nickel '1000 Nights' and
'Stupid Thing' The music that Buffy and the Scoobs are dancing to in the Bronze when Spike first checks them out!
Shawn K. Clement and Sean W. Murray - Spike Arrives

Inca Mummy Girl

Oz's band, Dingoes Ate My Baby, are shown playing at the Bronze. The Dingoes' music was provided by band Four Star Mary, with whom James Marsters has occasionally performed.

Danny Strong originally screen-tested for the part of Xander, and despite not getting that, did appear in the test pilot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Even though he only had one line, Danny managed to impress Joss Whedon enough to be asked to return in a semi-recurring role as Jonathon.

Music:

Chris Beck 'Sledgehammer' also Four Star Mary 'Fate' and 'Shadows'.

Reptile Boy

Inside the snake costume is Robin Atkin-Downes, more normally seen as Byron, a telepath with a penchant for poetry on Babylon 5. He's also cropped up as an uncredited demon on Angel a couple of times.

We find out that there are two more schools in Sunnydale; Kent Preparatory School and Crestwood College.

Music:

Act Of Faith 'Bring Me on', Louie Says 'She' and Clement and Murray 'If I Cant Have You', 'Wolves', 'Secrets', 'Devils Lair' and 'Graffiti Sound'.

Halloween

British actor Robin Sachs, who plays Ethan, appeared as Heinrich in the 1971 Hammer movie Vampire Circus. He's also featured in Jurassic Park - The Lost World and a couple of episodes of Babylon 5.

The note that Ethan leaves behind on the counter of the costume shop just says "Be seeing you."  It also refers to 60s cult drama The Prisoner.

Oops Moment:

If Willow is intangible as a ghost, who just passes through material objects, how come you can hear her closing the door when she leaves Ethan's shop?

Music:

Epperley 'Shy' and Treble Charger 'How She Died'.

Lie To Me

Billy 'Ford' Fordham is played by Jason Behr, who went on to much bigger things as Max, the lead character of alien teen drama Roswell High.

In the Sunset Club, Ford mouths the words of a vampire movie playing in the background. The film is the 1973 TV movie Dracula, starring Jack Palance and directed by Dan Curtis.

In the club, a man wearing full vampire get-up and standing in a coffin says "Hi" to Willow and Xander. He's played by Buffy makeup supervisor Todd McIntosh.

Music:

Creaming Jesus 'Reptile', Willoughby 'Lois on the Brink'.
In the first broadcast of Lie to Me, the music playing as Ford enters the Sunset Club is 'Never Land' by the Sisters of Mercy, from their album Floodland. In later broadcasts it was replaced by a specially composed track called 'Blood of a Stranger' by Clement and Murray, for copyright reasons.

The Dark Age

Xander discovers a picture of a youthful Giles with leather jacket and bass guitar. Sadly, Anthony Head's own photo album didn't contain anything suitable, so the Buffy production crew faked the photo by superimposing his head onto the body of Sex Pistol's bassist Sid Vicious.

Identifying the Mark of Eghyon, Willow exclaims that "any fool" could see that it predates Egyptian iconology. The Etruscans lived in Italy around 750BCE while the first Egyptian dynasty began over two thousand years earlier.

Music:

Chris Beck 'Mark of Eyghon'.

What's My Line Part One

The episode makes good use of Sarah Michelle Gellar's real life skill at figure skating - it's one of her hobbies.

This is the first episode in which the Scooby gang are actually referred to as such, by Xander.

We learn of another Sunnydale bar - the seedy Willie's Bar, where vamps and Demons are welcome!.

Enter Kendra, with her strange, strange accent, and her apparent ability to survive asphyxiation. How else did she breathe in that aircraft hold, as they're not pressurised.

Music:

Vivaldi 'Spring'.

What's My Line Part

"Back off, Pink Ranger," says Buffy to Kendra. It's a Buffy crew in-joke, as Buffy's (Then) stunt double Sophia Crawford also acted as Pink Ranger actress Amy Jo Johnson's stunt stand-in.

Oz's line about the Animal Crackers monkey, "I mock you with my monkey pants," was inspired by one of Alyson Hannigan's dreams. She told Joss Whedon that she'd dreamt Seth Green saying it, and he decided to use it.

The final assassin from the Order of Taraka is Patrice, the policewoman. She was played by Spice Williams, but for some reason didn't make it onto the credits.

Buffy warns Kendra not to watch the in-flight movie if it's got Chevvy Chase in it. A reference to Sarah Michelle Gellar's 1988 uncredited cameo in the Chase film 'Funny Farm'.

Willow kills a vampire for the first time in this episode. It's also the first time we actually see Giles dust one.

Ted

Ted takes Joyce and the Scoobies for a game of miniature golf, It's odd, then, that Willow had told us that Sunnydale didn't have a miniature golf course at the end of 'When She Was Bad'.

Ted is played by John Ritter, famed star of US sitcom Three's Company - a show based on British comedy hit Man About The House. He's the son of legendary country singing musician/actor Tex Ritter.

Music:

Chris Beck 'Accused' and 'Robot Rampage.    Los Angeles Post Music.

Bad Eggs

In Bad Eggs, a Bezoar is described as a "pre-prehistorc parasite." In the dictionary, it's described as a sort of stone found in the stomach of certain animals, mostly ruminants like sheep and goats, and once believed to be an antidote to most kinds of poison.

School ends at 2.30. Isn't that rather early?

There's a couple of acknowlegements to Buffy's strong internet community in this episode. In the science lab during the dissection, the words Posting Board can be seen on a blackboard - a nod to the regulars on the main Buffy forum.
Then, when Joyce enters the library, the words "website coming" and "BVS brats talk" can be seen on a signboard - another couple of internet in-jokes.

Music:

Mozart 'Die Zauberflote' and 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik'.
