Welcome to the Hellmouth

Sarah Michelle Gellar initially auditioned for the role of Cordelia on the tv show, but the producers decided that they wanted her in the title role instead.

It takes eight days to film one episode of the tv show.

Nicholas Brendan and Charisma Carpenter Were actualy in there late twenties when they first apeared on BtVS.

Welcome to the Hellmouth is based on the unscreened pilot episode shot by Buffy creator Joss Whedon. This pilot didnt feature the Master or Angel, but does feature Jonathan - who wouldnt officially appear in the show until season two.

The first time this episode was shown in America, it was preceded by a short trailer that referred to previous slayers such as Lucy Hanover (who now regularly pops up in the Buffy books and comics). This has never been shown again in America and has never been seen overseas.

Julie Benz, who plays Darla, originally auditioned for the role of Buffy.

The high school exteriors were shot at Torrance High School, previously used for the series Beverly Hills 90210. When the movie Shes All That subsequently filmed there, Sarah Michelle Gellar popped up for a brief cameo during a break in her Buffy schedule.

Oops moments:

When Buffy drops her stuff out of her purse onto the floor, we see a girl in the background walking down the hall. In the very next shot the same girl is walking down the hall but in the exact opposite direction.

When Buffy is looking for Willow in the Bronze, she snaps off a stool leg to use as a weapon. In the next shot, it has magically become an ordinary stake.

Music:

Four songs from the band Sprung Monkey are featured in the episode: 'Believe', 'Swirl', 'Things are Changing' and 'Saturated'. Also featured Mindtribe 'Losing Ground'.

The Harvest

Luke is played by Brian Thompson. He also played the Judge in the episodes Surprise and Innocence.

All the corridors in Sunnydale High School are the same set, quickly redressed by the designers between shots. Bigger budgets in subsequent seasons allowed the production team to add more corridors and classrooms.

Although never stated on screen, the Master is referred to as Heinrich Joseph Nest in the script.

Adult viewers will surely be amused by the choice of camera angle in the scene where Luke kneels before the Master to recieve his special powers. Joss Whedon was sufficiently embarrassed by this to apologise for it in his hilarious DVD commentary.

Director John T Kretchmer was the assistant director of Jurassic Park.

The exterior of the Bronze and neighbouring alley is actually the exterior of the Buffy soundstage in Santa Monica. Rather than use a conventional studio, the Buffy team converted huge warehouses and eventually put a graveyard in the car park. Most of the tombs, gravestones and mausoleums are actually made out of polystyrene.

Oops Moment:

Cordelia states that she is going to the Bronze on the night of the Harvest - a Friday. Strangely, everyone is back at school the next day.

Music:

Dashboard Prophets 'Ballad for Dead Friends' and 'Wearing Me down'.

The Witch

Check out the notice board in the first scene. It reads "1996 Cheerleading Tryouts," despite the episode being screened in 1997 in America. This is because Buffy was held back and used as a mid-season replacement show rather than starting as intended in the autumn of 1996.

This is the first time the term Slayerettes is used in the series as a nickname for Buffys gang.It isnt actually used again until season fours The I in Team.

Charisma Carpenter cheered for the San Diego Chargers back in 1991.

An unfilmed scene from the original script has Giles suggesting an alternative way of testing whether Amy is a witch:
"Yes, the ducking stool! We throw her in the pond. If she floats, shes a witch; if she drowns, shes innocent... some of my texts are a bit outdated."

Oops moments

Cordelias headband seems to have a mind of it's own! Before the tryouts we see her putting it on, while she's cheering it's disappeared, then when Amy falls on her it's back again!

On the Trophy in the cabinet (from Highschool, remember) The name on it is Catherine Madison. Now Amy had stated that her parents got married after Highschool, so surely the trophy would have Amy's mums
maiden name on it!

Music:

Humbucker 'Count the Time' and the dance music in the cheerleading sequences is 'Twilight Zone' (Rave Edit) by 2 Unlimited.

Teacher's Pet

The real Natalie French is played by Jean Speegle Howard - mother of top Hollywood director Ron Howard.

The episode was the first to be written by Co-Executive Producer David Greenwalt. He apparently started his career as a body double for actor Jeff Bridges.

For the first time, we learn that that Xander's middle name is LaVelle.

Oops Moment:

When Doctor Gregory lectures the class about ants, he is projecting the image of a beetle onto the screen behind him.

Music:

Band of the week at the Bronze are Superfine. They perform the tracks' Already Met You' (which appears on the official Buffy soundtrack album) and 'Stoner Love'.

Never Kill a Boy on the First Date

The first appearance of Andrew J Ferchland, who plays The Anointed One. Ferchland appeared throughout the first season before Joss Whedon had to concede that the young actor was growing up a bit too fast for a supposedly ageless vampire and disposed of him in season two.

Oops Moment:

In the scene where Buffy tells Giles, "If the Apocalypse comes, beep me," she grabs her pager from out of shot. Trouble is, she's standing in the middle of her hall and there's nowhere she could have picked the gadget up from.

When Buffy Stakes the Vampire at the beginning of the episide, how come his ring survives his dusting?

Music:

Kim Richey 'Let the Sun Fall down', Rubber 'Junkie Girl' and Three Day Wheely 'Rotten Apple'
Velvet Chain make their first appearance on the show here, performing the tracks 'Strong' and 'Treason' at the Bronze. The band's singer, Erika Amato, can often be found chatting to fans at the official Buffy web site's posting board.

The Pack

Ken Lerner's final appearance as Principal Flutie.

Oops Moment:

Nearly all the video clips of hyenas Willow watches on her computer monitor throughout the episode are actually of African wild dogs.

Music:
'All I Want' by the Dashboard Prophets, 'Reluctant Man' by Sprung Monkey and 'Job's Eyes' by Far.
The last track accompanies the shots of Xander and the rest of the pack roaming the school in slow motion.

Angel

When Angel hears Joyce scream, it's actually the sound of Buffy's scream taken from earlier in the episode.

Rumour has it, that in a prankish attempt to see if they could gross each other out, Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz would eat the smelliest food they could find before the kissing scenes!

Angel is the first episode that reveals Buffy's address to be 1630 Revello Drive. It's also the first to let us know that the Anointed One's real name is Colin.

Oops Moment:

While Willow is trying to tutor Buffy on the civil war, Darla watches in the background, and her reflection can be clearly seen in the side of one of the shinier bookcases

Darla seems to have a limitless supply of bullets in the final shoot out - despite never reloading her guns.

Music:

The track 'I'll Remember You' by Sophie Zelmani plays as  Buffy and Angel kissi at the Bronze.

I Robot... You Jane

Jenny Calendar's first appearance. Played by former dancer and member of Prince's New Power Generation Robia LaMorte, the character was originally to be called Nicki. This was changed to avoid confusion on set as Nicholas Brendon is generally called Nicky by his co-stars.

The announcer's voice on the radio Giles listens to is that of series creator Joss Whedon.

The lead Monk in the teaser section is credited as Thelonius. This is a reference to famous Jazz musician Thelonius Monk.

Director Stephen Posey began his career as a cinamatographer and director of horror movies. One such film, Slumber Party Massacre, was shocking enough to be banned in Germany.

The great Buffy birthday debate starts here. When Moloch accesses Buffy's school records, her date of birth is shown as October 24th 1980. Later in the episode the date mysteriously changes to June 5th 1979.
Season two's Surprise reveals that Buffy was born in mid January 1981. Finally, in season four's Doomed, she tells Riley that she is "Capricorn, on the cusp of Aquarius." This suggests she was actually born on or around January 19th 1981.

Oops Moments:

Giles says that a common practice was trapping demon's souls into books- I thought demons didn't have souls?

How exactly does Willow scan Moloch out of his book when the scan is only about two thirds the width of it?

Also, how does Buffy manage to follow Dave to the CRD building so easily when he's driving and she isn't?
