Technical Description
Pineapple (Ananas comosus), locally known as “pinya” is one of the most popular fruits in the country.  It is among the top agricultural commodities that generate significant foreign exchange earning for the national economy.  It originated in South America and was introduced in the Philippines by the Spaniards.  It is widely grown in the tropics and sub-tropical regions.

Several varieties grown in the country are Smooth Cayene or Hawaiian pineapple, most popular and best variety for canning; Queen or Formosa pineapple, the sweetest variety; Red Spanish (native) pineapple and Cabezona, largest type which measures approximately 8-12 inches high when ripe.

Pineapple fruit contains water, carbohydrates, Vitamin c, potassium and thiamin (Vit. B1).

Utilization
Pineapple is usually served fresh, sliced, chunked or as a juice and concentrate.  It can also be processed into jams,  marmalade, vinegar, wine, nata de piña, candies and other preserves, or simply dried and frozen.

Pineapple is also behind the existence of the industry for hand woven piña cloth in Aklan.  The pineapple leaves contain fine grade fibers which can be used in the manufacture of the luxurious and famous piña cloth.  The plant also serves as raw material for other fabrics, wall paper & furnishing.  The fibers can be made into twine cordage & quality doilies.  It is also used as cattle feed and meat tenderizer.

Pineapple also serves medicinal purposes such as the expulsion of intestinal worms or as aid in child delivery. The waste from canning can be processed into animal feeds.

Market Practices
Most farmers in Western Visayas directly market the fruits to consumers. Harvested fruits are brought to markets or sold along highway stalls.  Fresh pineapple export is monopolized by Mindanao growers.

Prior to marketing, pineapple are classified into small, medium, and large.  All grades must be pineapple of similar varietal characteristics – mature, firm, dry, clean and have developed eyes.  The tops should be of characteristics color, butts well trimmed and well attached to the fruit.

Specifications
Pineapple is one important raw material; for food processing and cloth. Common processed forms are canned pineapple in syrup, dried, juice and concentrates.  Pi
ña woven from the fibers of pineapple leaves is considered one of the most elegant textiles produced by hand in the Philippines.  Piña fabric is handwoven from the finest pineapple leaf extracted from the native pineapple plant (Red Spanish) variety.  It is considered a lucrative venture.

Wholesale buying of pineapple involves mature, green fruits classified into the following small, medium and large.

Seasonality
Peak season is from April to June. Lean month is from August to March.

Farm Gate Price 
The price of pineapple is influenced by demand and supply factors. Peak price is P40.00 to P50.00 per bundle.  Lean price is P50.00 to P60.00 per bundle. Per bundle is 6-12 pieces depending on the size.  Small sizes range from 11-12
pieces. Medium size is from 8-10 pieces.  Large size is from 6-7 pieces.
