John William Criddle and Sallie Franks John William (Banjo John) was born February 29, 1876 in Chickasaw Co. Ms. He died March 26, 1932 in Chickasaw County Ms. He was the son of William A. Criddle and Marietta Pate. His headstone states his birth year as 1877 however he was born in a leap year so it had to be 1876 because 1877 nor 1878 was a leap year. Both John and Sallie are buried in the Macedonia Methodist Church Cemetery near Houston, ms. John William Criddle married Sallie Franks about 1898 in Chickasaw County, Ms. Sallie Elizabeth Franks was born March 07, 1882 in Chickasaw Co, Ms. and died December 03, 1940 in Chickasaw Co. Ms. She was the daughter of Jacob F. Franks and Martha A. Brock.
History of John William Criddle John was called "Banjo John" because he played the banjo so well. According to census records he could read and write. John was a farmer. He and Sallie owned their own home.John was sick and had some pus draining from his ear and when the doctor came he put a powder in the ear to stop the pus from draining. When the pus could no longer drain it caused the infection to spread and it killed him. ( info given by his daughter Essie).
History of Sallie E. Franks According to census records she could read and write. Her son-in-law James Roy Rambo always talked about how wonderful Miss Sallie was and how she was always helping people. Sallie's brother Ollie L. Franks died in AR. and was brought back to MS. to be buried. Sallie fainted on his grave. Family helped her to get back home and into bed. She died during the night. The next day they buried her because all the family members were already there. Since that time it has been known that many of the children of the Criddle and Franks line has died or had serious heart problems. They just seem to have massive heart attacks and die immediately.
Children of John and Sallie 1) Jake Criddle was born: 4/02/1899 Chickasaw Co, M s. and died: 4/09/1970 Chickasaw Co, Ms. Jake married Annie Estelle Doss. She was born 10/1899 and died 2/1996. Both Jake and Annie are buried In Macedonia Cemetery near Houston, Ms. Their children are Malene, John William, Annie Ruth, Jessie Faye, and one daughter who died. 2) Levy Criddle was born 3/26/1900 and died 2/24/1934. He is buried in Macedonia Cemetery near Houston, Ms. Levy was riding on the fender of a car and was hit by a pickup truck which knocked him off the car. He was dragged and killed. They were not able to find the man who killed him. He was married twice, first to Ruth Franks she died at about. 22 y/o. They had two children 1. Jackie who died about 1962. She went into the hospital with pains in her stomach and on Monday morning she died. We never knew the cause. Jackie married Fred Stovall. 2.Their son Roxie married Christine Reed. Roxie had a sudden massive heart attack and died. Levy Criddle's second wife was Katie Rambo (sister of James Roy Rambo). They had two children 1. Maxcine "Sissy" 2. James Aaron Note: Katie later remarried and had another daughter Katie Lou. 3) James Ervin "Slick" Criddle was born 5/13/1902 and died 11/13/1934. He is buried at Macedonia Cemetery. Slick was killed while operating a drag-line in a gravel pit which caved in on him. Their children are James, Charles, Herbert, Louise, Buddy, JE. His youngest son J.E. was only one week old when Slick was killed. He married Nettie Mae Armstrong born 12/26/1902 and died 10/18/1983. Their children are James Harvey 12/14/1922 - 9/23/1994 in Denham Springs, La., Charles, Herbert Olen ,Nettie Louise 4/10/1930 - 11/25/1954, Buddy 12/18/1931, Robert Leon , J. E. Nov 6, 1934 (was only a week old when his father was killed). 4) Aaron Elbert "Dutch" Criddle born: 11/21/1904 Died: 3/04/1972. He married Minnie Vick Gann. Their children are 1. George Wayne died from emphysema 5/22/1972, 2. William Franklin "Hookie" b: 6/21/1929 died 12/2/1980 from sudden heart attack . lived in east Moline, IL. 3.SHIRLEY MAE 4. MARY JO 1/1/1939 5. James Rufus "toe head" b: 1023/1940 died 7/2/1986 from sudden heart attack 5) Lesley Lee "Jim or Jimmer "Criddle [twin of Essie Bee)] Born: 2/21/1907. He died April 21 1983 and is buried at Macedonia Cemetery, Chickasaw Co, Ms east of Houston, MS. Jim married Edna Dunn Franks. She was married to Harvey Franks, uncle of Jim, and they had two children Francis Franks and Martha Lou "Sissy" Franks Children of Edna & Jim are 1. Leo 2.Jimmie Faye Benner 3.Anna Dorse 4. Will Dunn (known as W.D.) 5. Ernest Merle 6.Jerry Eugene. Before marrying Jim, Edna was married to the brother of Sallie Franks Criddle. (Jim’s mother) and they had Frances & Martha (Sissie). 6. Essie Bee "Cal" Criddle [twin of Lesley)]Born: 2/21/1907Died: 4/5/1986. She married James Roy Rambo May 3, 1930. 7) Early or Iowa Criddle While at an old cemetery Essie pointed and said, "that’s my grandpa's (Jacob Franks) and that’s my baby sister’s grave." The baby's name was Iowa. |
