Review:
Without a doubt, the worst Godzilla film ever made. A young boy, tired of always being beaten up by a local bully named "Gabera", imagines what Godzilla's son, Minya, would do in a situation like that. So, off we go to Monster Island, where the boy has a little chat with Minya. Turns out that Minya is also plagued by a big bully, a monster also called "Gabera" [what an amazing coincidence!] For inspiration, the two watch stock footage of Godzilla fighting other monsters, and then work up the courage to defeat their respective nemeses. Watching this movie was literally a painful experience. By the end, I was writhing on the floor twitching spastically. But, hey -- I watched this film so you don't have to! Oh, the things I do for my fans...

Now, for those of you who are interested in the psychological/sociological implications of Godzilla, here's a thought for you. I was recently asked in an interview what I thought was the reason for Godzilla's enduring popularity. One reason I came up with was that kids liked Godzilla because they could pretend to be him when things got tough. I mean, what kid doesn't wish he could go around stomping on anyone who got in his way? And then it hit me -- that is exactly what this movie is about! Deep, huh? It doesn't make it any better of a film, unfortunately, but it's still something to think about....

On a side note, somebody sent me a copy of the original Japanese version of this movie. I'd have to say it was marginally better, but only because it was entirely in non-subtitled Japanese, and I couldn't understand a word anyone was saying!
