Getting started in DJing

This write up is a very basic idea of what items and tools you will need to start djing. While they are many types of turntables and mixer out there I'll just try to focus on the "must have" items and save the non-needed items later. Also as you might know it is very expensive to start buying equipment. Here is a list of the items that a dj can not go with out.

Turntable, $200~500

Technics SL-1200 MK3If you ever go to a club check out what kind of turntables the dj is using. 99.99% of the time it's the classic Technics SL-1200 direct drive turntable. The reason behind using a SL-1200 versus a cheaper turntable is "start-up" speed and sound damping. Cheaper turntables use belts instead of strong motors to save cost. While it's a cheaper turntable you loose performance when "back spinning" the record which is a very common technique to find the start of a song. Another factor is sound damping. The heaver the base the better it will do in a club with pounding subs hitting the floor. The last thing a dj wants to hear is feed back from the bass. If $1000 is too much to spend consider buying one Technics and a cheaper turntable. This way you can get used to the feel and upgrade the second table when you can afford it.

on to the mixers
