Finding MP3s
Ok,
we all know about Napster and how easy it makes getting your favorite
mp3s. Or is it? How many times have you gotten stuck with a slow user
that has had 20 downloads, or found the song you wanted but it sounds
like bad wav file? Well here's some of my personal tips to finding
and downloading your mp3s.
- Check both the "ping"
and bandwidth
If you find a user with
a super fast ping, say 20 that means the user is very close to your
location. Also remember that bandwidth figures allot to the amount
transferred. At home I have cable so my highest down load is about
80k/sec., if I connect to a user on 56k the fastest I can download
would be 8~10k/sec which can make a 5 mb take 20 minutes instead of
4 minutes!
When music is
compressed in to the mp3 format you have choices on what Frequency
and Bit Rate. Try to stay at least 128 for the Bit Rate, and 44,100
for the Frequency. Anything less will download faster but will not
sound as close to the CD original.
- People keep downloading from
me
Once you get broadband
everyone will download from you since you have the a faster connection.
This is what I do to keep the number of connection down. Go to File>Preferences
and click the Sharing tab. Change the Uploads per user to 1 and now
only 1 person can download at a time.
If you have any good mp3 ideas or just comments send them in!
